PERSONAL: Born Matthew “Matt” Alvaro West on Oct. 1, 1993 in Seattle, Wash. … Parents are Mark West and Raquel Chumpitaz-West… Matt’s mother played for the Peruvian National Volleyball Team at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow among many other international tournaments. In 1995, she was recognized by the Peruvian Sports Foundation as one of the best sportswomen in Peru… Matt’s father played Division I college volleyball at George Williams College in Downers Grove, Ill. Both parents are volleyball coaches as well… Matt has a grandfather and several cousins who play or have played professional soccer in Peru… Matt started playing organized indoor volleyball in 2005 for the Space Needle Volleyball Foundation… He has played beach volleyball for one year with partner Max Ozuna… Favorite food is Rib eye steak… Favorite book is “Where the Wild Things Are”… Favorite professional team is the Seattle Supersonics… Favorite athlete is Lloy Ball… Favorite musical artist is Snoop Dogg… Favorite movie is “Inside Man” and favorite actor is Denzel Washington… Most admired person is his mother because, "she managed to raise me well both from an athletic and behavioral perspective." INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: 2011: Played on the Boys' Youth National Team that competed in the Under-19 Pan American Cup in Mexicali, Mexico (Bronze). Matt was named best setter on the team and second best in the tournament with 57 assists. 2010 - Played on the U.S. Boys' Youth National Team that finished second to Cuba at the NORCECA Championship in Guadalajara, Mexico.
