Margin of Error Between Winning and Losing

Get up and go back to work! Pan Am Cup blog 3.

The post-match late night morning hangover is looming this am. Coaches already at work on scouting Argentina. Let me describe the scene: four coaches in a hotel room with four laptops all looking at Argentina's rotations, servers, floor defense, tendencies by setters and hitters, and blocking schemes. Jamie Morrison is then putting it all in a report to present to the players tomorrow since we do not play today.

Today is a day of shaking off a bad night's sleep for the players. It is tough to sleep after a late match because the adrenaline is still firing.

We will watch video at 1 to review last night's match and then head to practice. My job is to find a way to get the team to El Paso for a steak dinner. Easier said then done. Many of the players will get treatments with Jill the trainer. Players daily have to manage their bodies. Remember, it has been games and practices for the last five days.

Last night's crowd was definitely pro-brazil. In fact, when fans would chant the 'USA USA,' the Brazil fans would boo to try and drown them out.

Here is something to think about for all the parents and players in volleyball. Can you imagine playing on a team and never getting to play a home match? That is what the USA team does every night they play.

The match last night was two great teams with amazing athletes playing very fast tempo. The margin of error between winning and losing is slim. The level of mental toughness to play at this level is something that makes the difference of 2-3 points a match.

Hugh's message to the team was great. Work hard to correct some plays from last night. Continue to give great effort on every play, and follow the plan. One more serve, one more dig, one more great set can make the difference between winning and losing.

Buenos tardes, John
