On the Ground for World Masters Games

by Karin Thomsen / October 11, 2009

Our division for women’s 50+ has 9 teams participating from Brazil, Australia, Lithuania and our sole American contingency. Our pool play will start at 0900 tomorrow Sunday Oct. 11th in the Sports Hall across from our hotel, on the far end of the Olympic Park just beyond the Olympic flame which is now burning brightly.

The international flavor is palpable everywhere. The excitement is infectious as the start of the games looms ahead for all competitors. We understand that there are over 28,000 athletes from 93 countries competing for the precious few medals, but ecstatic to be playing in an international competition in the Olympic tradition in Sydney, Australia.

We have been told that the oldest competing athlete is 101 in swimming. So far we have met folks from New Zealand, England, Canada and Brazil and the day has just started. We are trying to adjust to the language differences with all the different cultures. We are sure they are trying to fi gure out also…good luck to them.

After the registration process is completed our team has scattered to various other sporting venues and tourist activities. Practice is scheduled at 4 pm today…more later.
