Teach a Man to Fish
by Rod Wilde / August 18, 2010
Photo: Rod Wilde Cuban boxer after learning how to fish from U.S. Girls' Youth Olympic Team Head Coach Rod Wilde. I went fishing again today and was joined by this Cuban boxer. He sat and watched me pull in a couple of fish and I asked him if he wanted to try.
He was a little hesitant at first but eventually I got him to try it. When he landed this one he had the biggest grin on his face. It was really fun to see because the Cuban are usually very stoic and don't smile much. He stayed around a caught a couple more fish and then left.
Later I saw him in the village with a couple of other boxers so I called out "El Pescdor" which roughly translates to the fisherman. He turned and smiled and gave me a thumbs up. It was pretty cool.
