The day was mostly spent sightseeing for the team as our matches were scheduled for later afternoon. Some folks went to the zoo, others to Sydney Harbor, and still others went to see other World Master sporting events in the Olympic Park complex. Athletes are encouraged to take in the local tourist sights, soak in the atmosphere of their fellow competitor’s venues and experience the plethora of restaurants and bars as part of the Australian cultural experience.
Our two matches were against the two Brazilian teams in our pool B. The first match was fairly easy with scores of 25-14 and 25-9. We were able to give all players an opportunity to contribute, and play in different positions. Our play was fluid and passing was the best so far for the tournament. Everyone was relieved at the conclusion of the second match win, as this would assure us a second round spot in the Gold Medal playoff pool.
The second match was quite another story...The scrappy defensive play of the No. 1 Brazilian team surprised and challenged us for the first time in this tournament. We faltered early and fell behind in the score, but persevered and soon tied up the game at 14-all. Our defense was sparked by the leadership of Jana Landal, Reba Spooner and Therese Butler and we were able to regain our passing accuracy enabling our setter, Shawn Hoover, to utilize all the front row hitters. Scores were 25-18 and 25-22…yes the last game was a squeaker.
Tomorrow we move on to the medal playoffs…
