Two Days "Off"

by U.S. Boys' Youth National Team / August 24, 2011

Hello Greg Petty here,

I am from Downers Grove, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. We've have been on our downtime for the past two days and it will be a good break for us going into the rest of the tournament. I'm very excited to be going into our new pool having Russia and Iran, two of the top teams in the world to play and compete against. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Monday, Aug. 22

I started off the day waking up kind of early to go and eat breakfast with the rest of the team. I had to wake up my roommate, Ben Patch as well. We went down to eat around 9:30 a.m. and then came back to our rooms. Then I fell back asleep for a while until 10:50 a.m. for the film sessions that we had planned with the coaches. I met with coach Rob Nielson and coach Ken Shibuya. We watched film of ourselves playing from this week and also of some matches from the 2008 Olympic games of Reid Priddy making blocking moves and attacking the ball. After that I went back to my room and took a nap until 1:25 p.m. I then went downstairs with the rest of the team to meet our guide to do a small tour of the city. We walked about seven blocks to go a small square full of vendors with random trinkets. I then went off with Cody Caldwell, Matt West, and Matt Tarantino to do a mini tour of the area we were in and we found an underground market. We then went on another walk to find a McDonald's, but we walked to one that was closed. Luckily, there was another one that was close so we just went to that one instead and feasted. Then, we walked back to the hotel and just went back to our rooms to chill with everyone. We later just fell asleep in our rooms for the night.

Tuesday, Aug. 23

We woke up late in the day at around 1:00 p.m. because we had another day off from matches. We then went to lunch as a team around 1:30 p.m. because we were leaving to go to practice at 2:30 p.m. We arrived at the practice facility ahead of schedule, around 3:15 p.m., because there actually wasn't nearly as much traffic as we had thought there would be. We had a very good practice and we looked as if we had already fixed the problems that we had seen in the videos form the previous day. Around 5 we ended our practice because the Korean team had to get their own session in. After the practice we took the long cramped van ride back to the hotel and decided what we wanted to do for the rest of the night. We just ended up ordering pizza and chilling with everyone in the room.

Thanks for the support,

Greg
