Sept. 29, 2010

Two days ago the U.S. team beat Argentina to win the first pool. The match finished and we returned to the hotel, arriving by 12:30 a.m. We finished dinner by 2 a.m. The guys made it to their rooms with enough time to pack and get a quick nap.

Awake at 4 a.m. to catch a 6:30 flight to Rome and a connection to Ancona, where our next pool will take place. The team arrived at the new (old) hotel and were starving. A nice lunch and nap before they made their way to the weight room. They had a day off from touching the ball and a good night’s sleep.

So, there might be some who wonder about what the guys are doing with their spare time, during the short flights. I noticed a number of closed eyes and noise canceling headphones.

As we walked through the airport in Rome, I got to catch up with a few of the guys and asked them how they are holding up with the hectic schedule. The answer from all is, "hey, this is a grind... the World Championships, you have to be tough." This answer is after a 2-hour sleep. These guys are tough. They are working hard in the weight room and staying together on and off the court.

We finished breakfast and are watching video. Practice this afternoon and preparation for the Czech Republic. Early thoughts on them are big and physical.

AB 101: Aaron Brock the team athletic trainer and secret weapon is doing a great job of keeping the guys loose, strong and put together if needed. Afternoon practice and more great Italian cuisine.
