DALLAS, TEXAS (July 1, 2008) – The 29th USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships, hosted by USA Volleyball at the Dallas Convention Center, crowned Open, National and American Division winners for the 17-year-old brackets on Tuesday as the 10-day event runs from June 26 to July 5.
AJV 17 Mizuno (Austin, Texas) defeated Skyline 17RoShamBoJason (Murphy, Texas) 25-22, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21to win the 17 Open Division title. Both teams were undefeated prior to the meeting, but both needed five-set victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the championship match. AJV 17 Mizuno knocked off Epic 17-1 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 18-16 in the quarterfinals and Wave 17Brent Spalding 25-20, 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9 in the semifinals. Skyline 17RoShamBoJason reached the title match by defeating Gold Cal 17 Jeff 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 18-15, 15-12 in the quarterfinals and TAV 17 Asics 25-19, 30-28, 27-29, 24-26, 15-11 in a marathon semifinal contest.
Impact VBC 17 Silver (Old Hickory, Tenn.) captured the 17 National Division title with a 25-13, 25-6 victory over Jammers HI 17 (Honolulu) in the championship match. Impact VBC 17 Silver advanced to the title match with a 17-25, 25-22, 18-16 victory over Mizuno M1 171 (Minnetonka, Minn.) in the quarterfinals and a 23-25, 25-14, 15-12 victory over Delta Valley 17 Blue (Stockton, Calif.) in the semifinals. Jammers HI 17 reached the championship match by defeating NE Elite 17 Asics (Omaha, Neb.) 25-22, 25-17, 15-12 in the quarterfinals and Southwest Illinois (Belleville, Ill.) 171 25-23, 25-20 in the semifinals. Both championship teams came back from a second round deficit to reach the title match.
Woodlands Stars - 17G (The Woodlands, Texas) defeated IPVA 17s (Ankeny, Iowa) 25-17, 25-22 to win the 17 American Division title. Woodlands Stars - 17G knocked off Sports City 17-1 Fight (Fresno, Calif.) 23-25, 25-17, 16-14 in the quarterfinals and GLQVC 17-Erie (Westlake, Ohio) 25-22, 25-23 in the semifinals to reach the championship match. IPVA 17s defeated Rockwood Thunder 171 (Eureka, Mo.) 12-25, 25-18, 16-14 in the quarterfinals and Golden Bear 17 Mizuno (Vallejo, Calif.) 20-25, 25-11, 15-9 in the semifinals.
The 15 Open, 15 National and 15 American Division will have their titles settled on Thursday, July 3. The 16 Open, 16 National and 16 American will hold championship matches on Friday, July 4. The 14 Open, 14 National and 14 American championships conclude the tournament on Saturday, July 5.
This year’s USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships includes 9,500 athletes from 788 teams. The tournament will crown 19 champions in age divisions ranging from 12-18. Open Division titles are disputed for the 14s, 15s, 16s, 17s and 18s, while National Division and Open Division contests championships for all seven age groups.
The USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships is estimated to add $15.5 million to the Dallas economy. With an anticipated total attendance of 40,000 from participants, coaches and fans, the event has set record hotel bookings. The 10-day event will be at the Dallas Convention Center and the tournament will be played in the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall. A total of 48 volleyball courts occupy one third of the Dallas Convention, the nation’s largest column-free exhibit hall.
