Croson, Ross Tie for Fifth at Beach Worlds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2009) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Jane Croson (Lakewood, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished tied for fifth on Saturday at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB Youth (U-19) World Championship in Alanya, Turkey.

Croson and Ross, ranked fourth in the event, opened play on Saturday by defeating Italy’s fifth-seeded Silvia Costantini and Maria Carla Scudieri, 21-19, 21-8 in 38 minutes to advance to the second round.

In the second round, Croson and Ross fell to Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Christine Aulenbrock, seeded second, 12-21, 18-21 in 39 minutes. Bieneck and Aulenbrock went on to reach the gold-medal match, where they will play Russia’s Irina Chaika and Ekaterina Karapischenko on Sunday.

Ross will next play internationally with partner Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) at the SWATCH FIVB Junior (U-21) World Championships on Sept. 16-20 in Blackpool, England.
