COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2009) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Jane Croson (Lakewood, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) has advanced to the first round of elimination at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB Youth (U-19) World Championship in Alanya, Turkey.
Croson and Ross, seeded fourth in the girls’ youth main draw, lost their final pool play match on Friday. Poland’s ninth-ranked Daria Paszek and Renata Bekier defeated Croson and Ross, 21-15, 25-23 in 43 minutes.
However, Croson and Ross’ two pool play victories on Thursday were enough to advance to the first round, where they will play Italy’s fifth-seeded Silvia Costantini and Maria Carla Scudieri on Saturday. The second-round and semifinal matches will also be played on Saturday, with the medal matches on Sunday.
The U.S. boys’ team of Parker Kalmbach (Coto De Caza, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), seeded second, lost its final pool play match on Friday to 11th-ranked Johann Timmer and Ryan Grubb of New Zealand, 16-21, 12-21 in 39 minutes. With a 1-2 record in pool play, Kalmbach and Stevenson did not advance to Saturday’s first round.
