U.S. Beach Team Places Fifth in Blackpool

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 19, 2009) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) and Summer Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished tied for fifth at the FIVB Junior (U-21) World Championship in Blackpool, England.
Machado and Ross, ranked eighth in the event, opened play on Saturday by winning their first-round match over Canada’s 13th-seeded Kaitlyn Krizmanich and Caleigh Whitaker, 21-13, 21-16 in 32 minutes.
However, in the second round, they fell to Netherlands’ second-ranked Danielle Remmers and Michelle Stiekema, 15-21, 14-21 in 32 minutes.
Remmers and Stiekema finished second at the 2008 FIVB Junior Beach World Championship and won the event in 2007.
Machado and Ross finished the tournament with a record of 3-2.
