COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 15, 2009) – A total of 123 athletes are scheduled to participate in the USA Volleyball High Performance Holiday Camps the last week of December. This year marks the eighth year the High Performance Department has held a holiday camp.

The USAV Girls’ Youth Holiday Camp, held Dec. 26 to Jan. 2 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, doubles as the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team tryout. The 19 players invited to the tryout are seeking a spot on the 12-player roster that will represent the U.S. at the 2010 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship held April 3-11 in Guatemala. This event also serves as a qualifier into the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship and for specific countries the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore.

The 2010 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship, typically held in July or August in even-numbered calendar years, has presented challenges to USA Volleyball High Performance staff with its earlier competition dates. The High Performance tryout schedule does not start until Feb. 12 and runs through April 29. In order to have an evaluation and training period as a team, the staff opted to use the 2009 holiday camp using the top Select age-level athletes moving up to the Youth age level to train together and select the 2010 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team for the NORCECA event. Although the U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team selection will be made prior to the start of the tryout schedule, youth athletes (born in 1994 or 1995) are still encouraged to tryout for all other High Performance programs in that age group including the Youth A2, Youth A3 and developmental camps.

The USA Volleyball High Performance tryout schedule for all three female age groups – Select Girls, Girl’s Youth and Women’s Junior – will be available next week on www.usavolleyball.org in the High Performance section under the “Discipline” tab. The Women’s Junior category includes females born in 1992 or 1993. The Girls’ Youth category includes females born in 1994 or 1995. Select Girls are athletes born in 1996, 1997, 1998 or 1999. For female athletes who are born in 2000 or later, contact the USAV High Performance office at (719) 228-6800.

In addition to the USAV Girls’ Youth Holiday Camp, two other High Performance camps will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs Dec. 26-30. The USAV High Performance Girls’ Select Holiday Camp and the USAV High Performance Women’s Junior Holiday Camp will be held on the USOTC complex.

The USAV High Performance Boys’ Youth National Holiday Training Camp will take place Dec. 26-30 at the Epic Club Volleyball Center (www.epicvb.com) in Poway, Calif. The camp, which includes boys born in 1993 or 1994 for the 2010-2011 international cycle for boys’ youth, will train for approximately 23 hours.

Each athlete will participate in nine to 11 training sessions during the holiday break with as many as three sessions a day.
