COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 18, 2009) – U.S. boys’ volleyball players will get the chance to call themselves Olympians in 2010 at the first Youth Olympics, which will be held Aug. 14-26 in Singapore.
The first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010 will bring together approximately 3,600 athletes, ages 14-18, and 1,450 officials. The Youth Games will feature all 26 sports on the program of the 2012 Olympic Games, with a smaller number of disciplines and events. Some disciplines will be non-Olympic with mixed gender and/or mixed NOC events.
USA Volleyball's 2010 Boys' Youth National Team (with a modified age group) is scheduled to participate, contingent upon successful qualification through the NORCECA Continental Championship.
Because the Youth Olympic Games are being held in the same year as the zonal qualification tournament for world championships, the timing of the NORCECA Championship has been pushed forward for the U.S. Boys’ Youth Team.
The NORCECA Boys’ Youth Championship is currently scheduled to be held April 3-11 in Guadalajara, Mexico. USA Volleyball will work closely with families of attending athletes to ensure than they can take time away from other school-related functions in order to participate.
Athletes interested in USA Volleyball high performance youth and junior national teams – and the Youth Olympic Games – should attend a boys’ high performance tryout. The boys’ HP tryouts are held across the country from Jan. 1 through the first weekend in March.
National HP tryout evaluations are classified using three different HP age group categories – Boys’ Select (boys born in 1995 or later), Boys’ Youth (boys born in 1993 or 1994) and Men’s Junior (men born in 1991 or 1992).
