Akers, Turner Win First Match in New Zealand

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 22, 2010) – The U.S. beach volleyball team of Angie Akers and Tyra Turner won its first match on Friday at the 2010 McEntee Hire New Zealand Open in Auckland.

Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.), ranked fifth in the world, swept Germany’s Sarah Hoppe and Katharina Culav, 21-18, 21-19.

Akers and Turner are scheduled to play New Zealand’s Michelle Kenny and Marie-Claire Brehaut on Saturday morning.

The McEntee Hire NZ Open is the finale of the 2010 McEntee Hire NZ Beach Volleyball Tour, which has travelled around the country during January.  Play will begin on Jan. 22. The quarterfinals are scheduled to take place on Jan 23, with the semifinals and finals on Jan. 24.
