COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 1, 2010) – Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer (Redondo Beach, Calif.) has been selected and accepted to sit on the USA Volleyball Board of Directors as its elite beach development representative. Her term, which runs through June 30, 2012, picks up the remaining years on the seat left vacant when Karch Kiraly (San Clemente, Calif.) stepped down to become an assistant coach on the U.S. Women’s National Team.
“We are delighted to welcome Joy to the USA Volleyball Board and expect to learn from her many insights about how to develop and train the next generation of beach athletes,” USA Volleyball Chairman of the Board David Schreff said.
McKienzie-Fuerbringer brings a unique perspective to the USA Volleyball Board as a top club director and trainer in indoor volleyball while coaching some of the top youth beach players in the world. She has 14 years experience as the head coach, head trainer and club director of Mizuno Volleyball Club in Redondo Beach, Calif. Her teams have garnered 14 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships medals since the club’s inception in 1994. McKienze-Fuerbringer has trained over 100 high school and college All-Americans and two Gatorade Players of the Year in the last five years. Further, her coaching background include stints as an assistant coach at Long Beach State, Golden West College and two high schools.
For the past 10 years, McKienzie-Fuerbringer has trained youth players competing on the beach at the highest levels in the United States and in FIVB World Championships. Among the youth players she has coached on the beach include Cynthia Barboza, Loren Barry, Alix Klineman, Ashley Engle, Dalas Dodd, Rebecca Strehlow. McKienzie-Fuerbringer has also assisted in the coaching of professionals Jen Kessy and Matt Fuerbringer.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the USA Board of Directors,” McKienzie-Fuerbringer said. “My involvement with both indoor and beach volleyball over the last 14 years will help promote and develop our junior beach programs.”
McKienzie-Fuerbringer, who is married to beach player Matt Fuerbringer, excelled on the court and sand as a player. She helped Long Beach State to three NCAA Division I semifinal appearances between 1990 and 1994, was selected an AVCA All-American in 1994 as the 49ers won the NCAA title, was chosen the 1995 Bud Light 4-Person Tour Rookie of the Year and was named the Best Defensive Player and Best Setter of the Year in 1996 on the Bud Light 4-Person Tour. Overall, she played three seasons on the Bud Light 4-Person Tour and the AVP. McKienzie-Fuerbringer has also competed in professional indoor leagues in Murcia Spain (2001-2002) and Amstelveen, Holland (1999-2000), while also coaching youth in both countries.
