COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 6, 2010) – Beach volleyball players willed bad weather away and competed at the first day of the USA Volleyball International Development Qualifier (IDQ) on Saturday in Long Beach, Calif.
Top finishers in the IDQ will represent the United States at NORCECA Beach Circuit events in Mexico, Guatemala, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The rain stopped just before the first match, and held off until the last match of the day as five of the top six seeded teams on the men’s side advanced to Sunday’s competition.
The women’s draw was fraught with three-set matches. Most notably, Gretchen Duffner partnered with 18-year-old Falyn Fonoimoana, who will attend USC in the fall, to overcome a 16 seed and win her pool and advance to Sunday’s single elimination round in the fourth spot.
