COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 19, 2010) – The U.S. Men’s and Women’s Sitting Volleyball Teams are in Egypt for the WOVD World Cup on March 20-26 in Port Said.
The U.S. Women’s Sitting Team will be looking to improve on its third-place finish at the 2008 World Cup. Since then the team finished second at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and won the 2009 Eurocup held in Netherlands.
Most recently, the U.S. Women topped Brazil and Canada to win the Parapan American Championship on March 6-8 in Denver.
“I’m really looking forward to going to Egypt,” U.S. Women’s Team Captain Brenda Maymon said. “We want to win there. It will also be one more step toward the World Championships.”
The United States is hosting the 2010 Sitting Volleyball World Championships on July 11-18 in Edmond, Okla. Both U.S. teams automatically qualified for the event, which will qualify the top three finishing teams of each gender for the 2010 Paralympic Games in London.
The U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team finished second to Brazil at the 2010 Parapan American Championship in Denver and has not played any European sitting teams since the 2006 Sitting World Championship, where the United States placed ninth.
“We’re looking forward to getting more matches under our belt,” said U.S. Men’s Sitting Head Coach Edgar Miraku. “It’s always hard to get enough matches. It serves the team well and everyone looks forward to playing new competition.”
