U.S. Beach Teams Take Silver, Bronze on Cayman Island

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 21, 2010) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Brooke Langston (Memphis, Tenn.) and Heather Lowe (Cypress, Calif.) won silver and the U.S. men’s team of Ivan Mercer (Antelope, Calif.) and John Moran (Phoenix, Ariz.) took bronze on Sunday at the 2010 NORCECA Beach Circuit Event in Grand Cayman on Cayman Island.
Langston and Lowe, who had advanced to Sunday’s semifinals without dropping a set, kept the streak alive by defeating Mexico’s Vanessa Virgen and Martha Revuelta, 21-17, 21-18.
But in the gold-medal match, the U.S. team fell to Puerto Rico’s Yarleen Santiago and Darian Acevedo, 14-21, 18-21. Langston and Lowe won $1,000 for the victory.
On the men’s side, after a loss on Saturday, Mercer and Moran had fought their way back through the consolation bracket to reach Sunday’s semifinal. But they lost in the semis to Puerto Rico’s Orlando Irizarry and Joseph Gil, 21-14, 14-21, 9-15.
In the bronze-medal match, Mercer and Moran defeated Canada’s No. 2 team of Maverick Hatch and Ben Saxton, 21-15, 12-21, 19-17, winning $750.
Canada’s No. 1 team of Martin Reader and Ray Sewell defeated Irizarry and Gil for the gold medal, 21-17, 18-21, 15-8.
The U.S. women’s beach team of Jen Snyder (Glendale, Ariz.) and Claire D'Amore (Torrance, Calif.) and the U.S. men’s team of Ty Loomis (Warner Robins, Ga.) and Matt Prosser (Ventura, Calif.) will compete March 26-28 at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in San Salvador, El Salvador.
