Teams from USC, Concordia Irvine Win at Beach Challenge

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 19, 2010) – Beach volleyball teams from USC and Concordia Irvine were the individual winners at the Second Annual USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday, while USC and Pepperdine tied for the overall team title.
Twenty-four collegiate women’s beach volleyball teams competed at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
USC’s Geena Urango and Alex Jupiter won the Collegiate Division, defeating Pepperdine’s Kiah Fiers and Caitlin Racich in the final, 16-21, 21-16, 15-7.
Pepperdine’s Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill and University of the Pacific’s Svenja Englehardt and Natalia Tomaszewska tied for third place as each lost in a semifinal match.
Concordia Irvine’s Lindsey Campbell and Stephanie Scheele won the Seniors Division, which was open to athletes who have exhausted their NCAA or NAIA eligibility with their final playing season being between Fall 2007 and Fall 2009, defeating Florida Gulf Coast’s Patricia Daugherty and Ana Kokanovic in the final, 21-19, 19-21, 15-13.
Campbell and Scheele earned a spot in the CBS College Sports Network’s 2010 Alt Games Collegiate Beach Championships on May 1-2 in Santa Barbara. The will compete for $5,000 in prize money and an automatic bid into the AVP Huntington Beach Open (June 4-6).
In the team competition, USC and Pepperdine tied for first while Fresno State was third and Pacific fourth.

Arizona Collegiate Sand Championships

Arizona State University took top honors Saturday in the second annual Arizona Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships held in Glendale, Ariz.
ASU, UTEP, Arizona Western College in Yuma, Phoenix College and Scottsdale Community College brought 16 teams total to the event. The teams spent the morning in pool play followed by a double elimination bracket.
In the end, ASU came out on top as Sarah Reaves and partner Ashley Kelty took the gold over teammates Cat Highmark and Ashley Kastl in the finals, 21-12.
