U.S. Men's Beach Team Third in Chiapas

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 17, 2010) – The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Marcin Jagoda and Stafford Slick finished third on Sunday at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Chiapas, Mexico.

Jagoda (Tarzana, Calif.) and Slick (Andover, Minn.) defeated Canada’s Samuel Schachter and Cameron Wheelan, 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 15-10) in the third-place match.

The team advanced to the bronze medal match the hard way. After beating Mexico’s team of Arturo Flores and Jesús Vallejo, 21-14, 21-12 on Saturday, they lost to Mexico’s other team of Ulises Ontiveros and Lombardo Ontiveros, 21-14, 21-11.

They came back in the consolation bracket to beat Puerto Rico’s Erik Haddock and Daniel Erazo, 21-17, 21-15 to advance to the semifinals, where they suffered another loss to Mexico’s Ulises and Lombardo Ontiveros, 21-17, 21-11.

The Cuban duo of Sergio Gonzalez and Yoendris Kindelán won the men’s gold medal.

The U.S. men’s team of Kevin Lynch (Venice, Calif.) and Dana Camacho (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who were sent to the consolation bracket by Jagoda and Slick on Friday, defeated Costa Rica’s Diego Alpizar and Rooper Espinoza, 21-18, 21-19, on Saturday. But they were eliminated by Canada’s Schachter and Wheelan, 21-14, 21-16.

On the women’s side, the U.S. team of Dana Kabashima (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas), which was sent to the consolation bracket on Friday, were eliminated on Saturday when it lost to Puerto Rico’s Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo, 19-21, 21-15, 19-17. Acevedo and Santiago went on to win the women’s tournament.
