U.S. Beach Teams go 2-4 on First Day in Alanya, Turkey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 16, 2010) – The U.S. beach volleyball teams competing in the World University Championships opened play on Wednesday in Alanya, Turkey. The two men’s teams went 1-3 while the two women’s teams finished 1-1 after both had a one-match bye.
The men’s USA1 team of Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Mark Van Zweiten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) opened the tournament with a 25-23, 21-14 victory over Estonia. However, they later lost a 2-1 (22-20, 14-21, 17-15) battle to Czech Republic.
The men’s USA2 team of Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii) fell to Brazil in its first match, 2-1 (13-21, 21-16, 15-6). Turkey topped Ciarelli and McKibbin in their second match, 2-1 (19-21, 21-16, 15-12).
The women’s USA2 team of Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) won its first match against Great Britain, 21-10, 21-13. Then had a bye in the afternoon.
The USA 1 women’s team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) had a morning bye, then faced Czech Republic and lost, 21-10, 21-17.
The tournament will continue on Thursday.
