Women’s Beach Teams Undefeated on Day Two in Turkey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 17, 2010) – The two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams participating in the World University Championships in Alanya, Turkey finished pool play and the first round of the double-elimination playoff without a loss on Thursday.
Bouncing back from their loss to Czech Republic 1 on Wednesday, the women’s USA 1 team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) defeated Germany 2, 21-19, 21-18. The pair began the playoff round defeating Canada, 21-14, 21-15 and will face Czech Republic 2 at 9 a.m. in round two on Friday.
The women’s USA 2 team of Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) finished pool play with a perfect 2-0 record after defeating Japan 1, 21-16, 16-21, 15-6. Because of their first-place finish, Ledoux and Machado received a first-round bye of the double-elimination playoff and will face France at 9 a.m. (local time) on Friday.
Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Mark Van Zweiten (Pompano Beach, Fla.), the men’s USA 1 team, finished pool play with a win over Great Britain 1, 20-22, 21-18, 15-9, improving their record to 2-1. They faced Turkey 2 in the first round of the double-elimination playoff and won 23-21, 21-16. They are scheduled to play Japan 1 at noon (local time) on Friday.
The men’s USA 2-team of Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii) skipped straight to the playoff round after a bye in the final round of pool play. They took on Poland 1 and lost 20-22, 19-21. After a second round bye, they are scheduled to play the loser of Spain and Czech Republic 1 at 4 p.m. (local time) Friday.
