U.S. Beach Teams Advance to WUC Round of 16

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 18, 2010) – The four beach teams competing at the World University Championships in Alanya, Turkey, are still alive after two more rounds of the double-elimination playoff on Friday.

All four teams have made it to the round of 16 in both the men’s and women’s brackets.

The women’s USA 1 team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) were topped by Czech Republic 2, 17-21, 18-21. They then played Austria 2 and won, 21-11, 21-16.

Day and Moriarty will face their U.S. compatriots Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.), the USA 2 team, in an elimination match at 9 a.m. (local time) on Saturday. The winner will play Estonia at 11 a.m.

Ledoux and Machado lost their first match of the day to France, 17-21, 21-19, 18-20. The pair bounced back and topped Japan 1, 21-12, 21-15.

The men’s USA 1 team of Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.) defeated Japan 1, 21-18, 21-19.The pair then faced France 1 and lost, 22-24, 14-21. They will play the winner of the match between Austria and Turkey on Saturday.

Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii), the men’s USA 2 team, defeated Czech Republic 1, 13-21, 21-18, 15-10. They will play Poland 2 at 10 a.m. (local time) on Saturday. If they beat Poland, they will play Czech Republic 2.
