SIESTA KEY, Fla. (June 20, 2010) – The Palm Beach Gardens-based team of J. D. Christie and Tyler Lesneski went undefeated this weekend at the Corona Light Wide Open in Siesta Key, capturing the Men’s Open division with a hard fought 15-10 win over Neil Mayo and Jason Aucoin in the final match.
Christie and Lesneski won the winners’ bracket and advanced to Sunday’s final defeating Mayo, of Fort Lauderdale, and Aucoin, from Plantation, in the last match of the winners’ bracket and forcing the South Florida duo to play, and win, one more match to set up the Men’s Open final. Mayo and Aucoin were won that match, but in the end did not have enough to upset Christie and Lesneski in the final.
Sunday’s win in Siesta Key earned Christie and Lesneski an automatic berth into the 2010 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball.
Several divisions of play were decided Saturday, including the Women’s Open division. Heidi Ford, of Saint Petersburg, and Carla Imperatore, from Clearwater, outlasted Chantelle Jordan, of Merritt Island, and Amy Cameron, from Melbourne, 15-7.
In other divisions, the Boca Raton team of Amanda Angermeier and Flavia Pereira won the Women’s AA division, while Miami’s Camilla Pagnan and Monica Fine, from Deerfield took top honors in Women’s A.
The Men’s AA title went to Jason Burgess and Robert Ritchie, both from Fort Myers and Jupiter’s John-Michael Plummer and Dane Lux won the Men’s A division. Mike Permer and Joey Sabul, both from Jensen Beach, won the Men’s B/BB title.
Play in the two co-ed divisions was still underway late Sunday.
Winners in up to eight of the two-person divisions earn an automatic berth into the 2010 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, which will be played this September in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Siesta Key was the third stop on the nine-city Corona Light Wide Open Tour. Next weekend the tour begins a West Coast swing with an event at the famed pier in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Other stops remaining in the 2010 schedule for the tour include Santa Cruz, Calif., Chicago, Ill., Breckenridge, Colo., Long Beach, N. Y. and Point Pleasant, N.J before the Tour wraps up in September at the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball in Manhattan Beach, Calif.
