RENO, Nev. (June 25, 2010) – There are some things in the volleyball world that will never go out of style: ribbons in the hair, headbands, the side ponytail and braids. But for Laguna Beach 15-Whiz, it’s more about setting trends than following them.

At the 2010 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships being held June 24-July 3 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, the squad decided to take their support of its 14 Quon team past simply cheering and clapping. They decided to stick their hair straight up in the air using a water bottle. To achieve this look, it requires one to bend over and put a water bottle at the crown of their head. They then put a hair-tie at the top of the water bottle to ensure that the hair will not move, giving them a cone-head type look.

“We wanted to try to give them energy and get excited,” 15 Whiz setter Kyra Goodman said. “We wanted to make them smile and get pumped to play.”

Part of the reason the team took on the extreme level of fan support was that, over the years, it has become somewhat of a Laguna Beach tradition. Goodman’s sister did it for her team two years ago and they felt it was their responsibility to keep it alive.

“We wanted to carry on the tradition,” outside hitter Kristie Hewko said. “But the flowers in the top, that was an original idea.”

Laguna Beach 15 Whiz opens up play June 25 and are hoping to not only walk out with a lasting impression among fans, but with the title of champion.

“We want to play our best and hopefully we’ll medal,” Hewko said. “We are really excited and amped and we’re really trying to have fun.”
