RENO, Nev. (June 27, 2010) - Championship court inside the Reno-Sparks Convention Center held its first championship matches of the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships Sunday in Reno, Nev.
The 14 Open Division was the first to hold a gold-medal match at 10 a.m. Miz LB Rockstar 14 (Southern California), seeded seventh, and Delta Valley 14-1 (Northern California), seeded second, competed for the title. The first set started point-for-point, but Delta Valley gained a distinctive 17-11 lead. Long Beach fought to within one point, 21-22, of Delta Valley, but it was not enough as Delta Valley won the set 25-23.
In the second set, Long Beach tightened up its play by significantly cutting down its unforced errors, and with some momentum from the comeback in the first set, defeated Delta Valley 25-13.
The third set started with a quick 3-0 run by Delta Valley. Its scrappy play and relentless pursuit started to frustrate the Long Beach offense that was throwing all it could at the squad. But eventually, Delta Valley defeated Long Beach, 15-7.
Long Beach defeated fifth-seeded ASICS MAVS 14 Blue (Heart of America) in the semifinal, while Delta Valley topped TAV 14 VB Rags Black (North Texas) to play for gold.
The 14 National Division first-place match was the second championship to play. The 37th-seeded team Ka Ulukoa 14 Wekiu (Aloha) faced top-seeded City Beach 14 Black (Northern California) at noon. Ka Ulukoa started off the match with a lot of energy and emotion that helped pace it to a 5-1 lead. Even though City Beach did everything it could to battle back, Ka Ulukoa kept every point-streak from the opposite side of the net to only two. The Hawaiian team defeated City Beach, 25-16.
The second set started much like the first, but City Beach fought back and tied the score at 7-7. Eventually Ka Ulukoa pulled ahead, 16-12, and kept the momentum in its favor. The team from Hawaii defeated City Beach, 25-18.
Ka Ulukoa reached the final after defeating 14s Mizuno Black in the quarterfinal then Northern Lights 14-1 (North Country) in the semifinal. City Beach defeated Black Swamp 14 Moran (Ohio Valley) in the quarterfinal and Amarillo Aces 14-1 (Sun Country) in the semifinal. Northern Lights and Amarillo Aces tied for third.
The final medal match of the day was the 14 American Division final between No. 23 Nike Six Pack 14-1 (Iowa) and No. 13 NKYVC 14 Tsunami (Ohio Valley) at 2 p.m. Six Pack held the majority of the momentum in the first set, but NKYVC tied the set at 20-20. Six Pack served strong and eventually won, 25-21.
In the second set, Six Pack played much of the same game as the first and eventually pulled ahead of NKYVC 10-3. Even though NKYVC fought back and played tough, it was not enough to close the gap. Six Pack won the set, 25-17.
NKYVC reached the final match after defeating Frisco Bay All Stars (Northern California) in the quarterfinal and So-Cal Elite 14-Elite (Southern California) in the semifinal. Six Pack moved on to the gold-medal match after defeating Colorado Jrs 14 Flene in the quarterfinal and Coast 14-1 Luis in the semifinal. So-Cal Elite and Coast tied for third place.
