RENO, Nev. (June 28, 2010) – The 2010 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships, being held June 24-July 3 in Reno, Nev., has seen many new and interesting style choices. For Springfield 15 Blue from Springfield, Miss., its unique style choice was more about having fun than getting others to follow.

One night earlier this year, a few girls from the team headed to the house of one of the families, the Justice’s. The Justice’s have a hot tub and they thought it would be fun to get in. To be funny, player Brandy Glessner put on her friend Michael’s board shorts.

“We thought it was so funny,” Glessner said. “When we were sitting in the hot tub, we thought, ‘Why don’t we wear these for warm-ups?’”

The next day, the team had a tournament and sported its new board shorts for everyone to see.

“They’re good luck for us,” player Maris Below said. “They get us pumped up and they show off our personalities.”

Instead of buying the board shorts and getting strange looks from store employees, they borrow the beachwear from male friends and boyfriends. So far the shorts have taken them to compete in bracket-play for the 15 American Division. They are hoping that their good luck charm will help them get to the championship match.

“All of our parents are going to wear them tomorrow,” Below said. “We hope all that good luck will help us get to the championship.”
