RENO, Nev. (June 28, 2010) – The 13 National and American Divisions of the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships concluded Monday with both divisions crowning their champions at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev.

The 13 American Division saw top-seeded Rockwood Thunder 13-1 (Gateway) face third-seeded Team Piko 13 (Aloha). The three-set match was back-and-forth between the two teams. Rockwood defeated Piko in the first set, 25-21. However, scrappy defense and in-system swings propelled Piko to a 25-19 victory in the second set.

The third set started like how the rest of the match, point-for-point. But the momentum was in Rockwood’s favor and it led 8-6 at the switch. Rockwood widened the gap to four points, 10-6, but sheer determination and all-out effort from Piko pushed the squad even with Rockwood, 11-11. Piko led at 13-12. However, serving and aggressive attacking was the key to Rockwood’s fight back for the lead and they went on to win the set, 15-13.

Rockwood defeated Payes Black 13-1 (Northern California), the eighth seed, 29-27, 25-18 in the quarterfinal, then defeated fifth-seeded Iowa Rockets 13 Black (Iowa),25-14, 25-20, in the semifinal.

Piko reached the final after defeating the third-seeded NKYVC 13 Tsunami (Ohio Valley), 25-14, 25-16, in the quarterfinal and, the second seed, Mizuno Long Beach 13 Mizuno (Southern California), 25-23, 22-25, 16-14, in the semifinal.

Top-seeded ASICS MAVS 13 Blue (Heart of America) and sixth-seeded SG Elite 13 Roshambo (Southern California) competed for the 13 National championship title match. After three lead changes in the first 20 points of the set, SG pulled ahead by as many as four points, 13-9, and maintained the spread throughout much of the match before MAVS fought back to within two, 22-20. But MAVS’ efforts was not enough to top SG, who won the set 25-22.

The second set started with the momentum in the MAVS’ favor and it led 8-7 early in the match. But the consistent emotional game from SG helped push it to lead the match at 10-9. They led throughout the rest of the set and eventually won, 25-21.

SG Elite reached the gold-medal match after defeating third-seeded Borinquen Coqui 13-1F (Puerto Rico), 25-18, 25-14, in the quarterfinal and second-seeded WAVE 13 Katie Spalding (Southern California), 25-20, 25-23, in the semifinal.
