Invasion 15 Black, City Beach 15 Black, Club West 15 Elite Win Titles

RENO, Nev. (June 29, 2010) – The 15 Open, National and American Divisions of the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships crowned their champions on Tuesday at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev.

The 15 Open Division saw two Central Time zone teams compete for the title of champion. Mizuno Northern Lights 15-1 (North Country), the top-seed, faced third-seeded Invasion 15 Black (Heart of America).

Invasion came out swinging in the match and won the first set, 25-20. It carried the momentum to the second set and was firing on all cylinders. The team’s offensive tactics were unstoppable and its defense seemed impenetrable. Invasion won the second set 25-14.

Invasion defeated second-seeded TAV 15 VB Rags Black (North Texas) 25-19, 25-22 in its semifinal match.

Northern Lights reached the final match after defeating fourth-seeded St. Louis CYC 15 Green (Gateway) 25-20, 23-25, 19-17 in the semifinal.

In the 15 National Division, top-seeded Tejas 15 Kaepa 1 (North Texas) competed against seventh-seeded City Beach 15 Black, (Northern California). The first set started with City Beach on top, but Tejas kept fighting and took the lead at 17-16. However, City Beach tied the game back up at 19-19 and took the set, 25-23.

Set two began with Tejas leading until City Beach came back and were winning and took a 12-10 lead over Tejas. The set went back and forth between the two teams but Tejas eventually defeated City Beach, 25-22.

The third set was much like the first two between the two teams. Tejas and City Beach kept fighting to take the lead that would carry them to win the gold medal. City Beach led 8-6 at the switch and eventually won the title of champion with a 15-13 score in the finale. The three-set match had a total of nine lead changes and was a nail biter for all those who corralled around center court.

Tejas reached the championship match after defeating eighth-seeded Spril 15 Black 23-25, 25-14, 15-12 in the quarterfinal. It then defeated fifth-seeded Synergy 15 Orange 22-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the semifinal match. 

City Beach reached the final match after defeating second-seeded Colorado Jrs 15 Sherri (Rocky Mountain), 20-25, 25-20, 15-9, in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, the defeated sixth-seeded Black Swamp 15 Orwig (Ohio Valley), 23-25, 25-23, 15-6.

The 15 American Division Championship match followed between eighth-seeded Vision Zone 15 Elite (Southern California) and sixth-seeded Club West 15 Elite (Southern California). Club West took the first distinctive lead of the set at 6-4, but the unstoppable offense from Vision Zone eventually led it to a four-point lead, 19-15. Zone defeated Club West, 25-18.

The second set was back and forth between the two teams and neither took more than a two-point lead and was tied at 21-21. Eventually the aggressive Club West offense propelled it to a 25-23 victory.

Zone began the third set on top, 4-2, and would eventually defeat Club West, 15-6.

Vision Zone reached the gold-medal match after defeating the top-seed SG Elite 15 Roshambo (Southern California), 25-21, 25-17, in the quarterfinal. It then defeated the fifth-seed Springfield 15 Blue (Heart of America) 25-11, 25-23 in the semifinal.

Club West defeated third-seeded Titan Juniors (Heart of America) 28-26, 25-12, in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, it defeated seventh-seeded Lakewood Performance 15 (Rocky Mountain) 25-18, 25-23.

This schedule includes gold-medal matches in the Open, National and American Divisions for 17s (July 1), 18s (July 2) and 16s (July 3) age groups.
