RENO, Nev. (July 2, 2010) – The 18 Open, National and American Division club members played their last junior matches of 2010 on Friday at the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships in Reno, Nev.
The 18 Open Division final was a Southern California showdown between top-seeded Rancho Valley 18-1 (Southern California) and third-seeded Sports Shack 18 ASICS (Southern California).
Sports Shack started the first set with a quick 3-0 lead over Rancho Valley. But the two teams were all tied up at 13-13. The two squads stayed within one point of each other, but aggressive pin-to-pin attacking from Sports Shack led it to a 25-23 victory.
Rancho Valley came out in the second set hungry for a third set and took the lead at 6-5, then extended its cushion to three points at 13-10. However, sound serve receive and flawless out-of-system play helped Sports Shack back in the set and into a 17-all tie. The two teams battled back and forth, fighting to find 25 points first, but Sports Shack’s errorless attacking proved to be the key and they won the set, 25-23.
Sports Shack reached the final contest after defeating second-seed Vision 18 Gold 25-22, 25-19 in the semifinal.
Rancho Valley defeated fourth-seeded Laguna Beach 18 MS (Southern California) 25-19, 25-16 in the semifinal.
Fifth-seeded DPR 18 (Rocky Mountain) and seventh-seeded Golden Bear 18 FF (Northern California) competed for the 18 National Division title. Golden Bear came out flawless in the first set and found an early groove that led it to a 25-18 victory over DPR.
In the second set, the fighters from DPR did not want to go home with silver and clawed their way back into the match with a 28-26 victory.
Heading to the third set, both teams had all-over-the-floor defense, but smart attacking from DPR pushed it past Golden Bear to a 15-8 victory.
DPR reached the final match after defeating fourth-seeded CVC 18 Black (Ohio Valley) 25-14, 16-25, 15-11 in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, it defeated top-seeded River City Juniors 18-1 (Great Plains) 25-23, 25-22.
Golden Bear defeated second-seeded VolleyFX 18 Magic (Western Empire) 25-21, 25-22 in the quarterfinal. It then beat third-seeded Cincy Classics 18 Red (Ohio Valley) in the semifinal.
The 18 American Division gold-medal match was between third-seeded IPVA 18 Black (Iowa) and fourth-seeded North West Juniors 18 Air Max (Columbia Empire). IPVA started the first set on top and maintained its lead throughout the set. Even though North West kept fighting, IPVA broke away and took a seven point lead at 17-10. North West kept fighting and cut into the gap, but IPVA’s lead was good enough to lead it to a 25-20 victory.
North West came out in the second set ready to battle for gold by taking an early 11-8 lead. IPVA came back to tie the set at 16-16, but tough North West serving in the final points forced IPVA to become much more predictable in their attacking choices. The end result was a North West 28-26 victory.
In the third set, IPVA kept up the tough serving and led 12-8. The team maintained the four-point lead to win the set, 15-11.
