Naranjito Envol Pulls in Gold at USAV Boys' Junior Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas (July 4, 2010) – Naranjito Envol (Puerto Rico) used its size advantage to win the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships 12 Club Division Sunday afternoon at the Austin Convention Center in Texas.

In the gold-medal match, Naranjito topped Vaqueros 12-1 (Puerto Rico) with scores of 25-13, 25-21. Earlier, Torrimar 12-2 (Puerto Rico) handled Borinquen Coqui 12-1M (Puerto Rico) in the bronze-medal match. As the medalists received their hardware on the podium, chants of “Puerto Rico” broke out among the crowd as it swept the lowest age division of the championships.

In the title match, Naranjito raced to a 4-1 advantage in the opening set. It then extended its lead to 10 points at 13-3 with three unanswered points. Naranjito built a 15-point cushion at 21-6 before Vaqueros scored three consecutive points to cut the gap to 21-9. However, Naranjito put it on cruise control to capture the first set 25-13.

The second set was tight in the early going before Naranjito knocked down three straight points to assume a 10-7 advantage. It stretched its margin to eight points at 16-8 as part of an 8-1 scoring spurt. Vaqueros rallied to within five at 20-15 with three consecutive aces. Vaqueros continued to chip away and pulled to within two at 23-21, but Naranjito answered with the final two points of the set for a 25-21 victory.

On Monday, the 18 Open and 18 Club Division titles will be settled on the court.
