SCVC, Piterres Claim 15s Titles at USAV Boys' Junior Nationals

AUSTIN, Texas (July 7, 2010) – SCVC 15 Quiksilver (Southern California Region) and Piterres 15 (Puerto Rico) captured the 15 Open and 16 Club Division titles, respectively, Wednesday afternoon at the 31st Annual USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships held at the Austin Convention Center in Texas.

SCVC 15 Quiksilver swept 949 15 Black (Southern California 25-22, 25-21 in the 15 Open Division gold-medal match. Earlier in the tournament 949 15 Black defeated SCVC 15 Quiksilver 25-18, 26-24.

In the opening set, SCVC 15 Quiksilver grabbed a 9-6 edge before 949 15 Black rallied to tie the set at 11-all. After trailing 13-11, 949 15Black rallied to take an 18-17 advantage after Christian Hessenauer put up a block and a SCVC 15 Quiksilver error. However, the lead was short-lived as SCVC 15 Black regained the lead at 19-18 on a Cole Fiers ace. The advantage increased to 20-18 and SCVC 15 Quiksilver rode out the set to a 25-22 victory.

949 15 Black surged an early 4-1 advantage in the second set and pushed the lead to 8-4. However, SCVC 15 Quiksilver charged back to tie the set at 10-all on a Jackson Bantle ace. Nick Rademacher stretched the SCVC 15 Quiksilver lead to 13-11 with an ace. After 949 15 Black came back to within one at 15-14, SCVC 15 Quiksilver rattled off five of the next seven points to assume a 20-16 advantage and cruised to the 25-21 victory.

SCVC 15 Quiksilver reached the gold-medal match by defeating Ultimate B15 Gold (Great Lakes) 25-20, 25-12 in the semifinals. 949 15 Black advanced to the title match after handing a Halcones de Torimar (Puerto Rico) a 26-24, 25-15 loss. Torimar recovered to defeat Ultimate B15 Gold 25-23, 25-19 in the bronze-medal match.

Balboa Bay 16 Quiksilver bounced back to dominate SCVC 16 Quiksilver 25-8, 25-22 in the bronze-medal match.

Rademacher was named the 15 Open Division most valuable player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Cerrick Chiu (Bay-to-Bay 15 Nike Black), Kupono Fey (Ka Ulukoa M15 Mizuno), Luis Garcia (Halcones de Torimar 15), Mark Hansen (Ultimate B15 Gold), Chris Kennedy (SCVC 15 Quiksilver), Cory Lowe (949 15 Black), Riley Mallon (SCVC 15 Quiksilver), Cullen Mosher (Ka Ulukoa M15 Mizuno), Jackson Pries (Balboa Bay 15 Quiksilver), Bryan Rosario (Halcones de Torimar), Thomas Thayer (949 15 Black), Mitchel Weiler (Ultimate B15 Gold), Alonso Wong (Ka Ulukoa M15 Mizuno) and Jack Yoder (949 15 Black).

In an all-Puerto Rico 15 Club Division gold-medal match, Piterres defeated Vaqueros 15-1 25-23, 28-26 to secure the title. Leading 12-11, Piterres made a push to 14-11 following an ace. The teams traded two-point runs until Vaqueros’ Georgeshua MacFarquar served an ace to tie the set at 17-all. Piterres claimed a critical two-point cushion at 22-20 on Vicente Guzman Rivera’s ace. Piterres reached set point at 24-21, but Vaqueros saved two set-point opportunities before Piterres ended the set at 25-23.

The 15 Club Division final’s second set started with a flurry of service errors. Trailing 10-8, Vaqueros rallied to take a 13-12 edge. However, Piterres answered with five unanswered points to take a 17-13 advantage. Vaqueros fought back and saved two match points before taking the lead at 26-25. Piterres’ Alexandre O'Neill Ramos put up a block to yield a fourth match point at 27-26. Dwayne Garcia Velez capped the match at 28-26 with a kill for Piterres.

To reach the gold-medal match, Piterres topped Santa Monica Beach Club 15-Black (Southern California Region) 25-12, 25-19 in the semifinals while Vaqueros stopped Pittsburgh Volleyball Club 15-1 (Keystone Region) 25-18, 25-21 to advance to the title match. Santa Monica Beach Club 15-Black won the bronze medal by outlasting Pittsburgh Volleyball Club 15-1 with scores of 25-17, 20-25, 19-17.

O’Neill Ramos was named the 15 Club Division most valuable player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Weston Barnes (Balboa Bay 15 White), Hector Candelario (Vaqueros 15-1), Soren Dion-Kindem (Santa Monica Beach Club 15-Black), Dwayne Garcia Velez (Piterres 15), Brad Hankus (Balboa Bay 15 White), Tommy Keisling (Pittsburgh Volleyball Club 15-1), Andrew Lancaster (Riptides OC – 15 Orange), Giovanni Llinas Rosa (Piterres 15), Shaughn McDonald (Pittsburgh Volleyball Club 15-1), Will Park (Riptides OC – 15 Orange), Roberto Perez (Vaqueros 15-1), Gabriel Pritz (Pittsburgh Volleyball Club 15-1), Ricardo Rodriguez (Vaqueros 15-1), Javier Santiago Mendez (Piterres 15) and Max States (Santa Monica Beach Club 15-Black)
