COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 16, 2010) - USA Volleyball’s Beach High Performance program has 27 athletes who competed on Friday in the qualifier for the AVP NIVEA Tour Hermosa Beach Open on the north side of Hermosa Beach Pier.

Hermosa Beach has been home to the AVP since 1984 and is one the biggest and most anticipated events of the year.

On the men’s side, there are 14 HP beach athletes fighting for placement into the main event. The members of the beach high performance program are: Mark Van Zweiten (Pompano Beach, Fla.), the team of Evan Barry (Del Mar, Calif.) and Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), partners Jeffrey Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Antonio Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Andrew McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), the team of Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Brandon McLaughlin (Huntington Beach, Calif.), partners Jace Olsen (Chandler, Ariz.) and David Vender Meer (Grand Rapids, Mich.), partners Brandon Fuimaono (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.), Steven VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Hudson Bates (Fairfax, N.J.).

There will also be 13 women competing to qualify for Main Draw on Saturday: Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas), Kiley Hall (Austin, Texas), the team of Jane Croson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.), partners Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.), the team of Chelsea Rashoff (Danville, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.), partners Lara Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Rebecca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif.) and the team of Courtney Trevino (Austin, Texas) and Mary Vaccaro (Orinda, Calif.).

Brooke Sweat (Estero, Fla.), also a USAV beach high performance athlete, received a bye to the Main Draw on Saturday along with U.S. men’s beach high performance athlete Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.).

Main Draw competition for the men and women starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Main Draw will start on Sunday at 8 a.m. and will conclude with the men’s final match at 2:30 p.m. followed by the women’s final match at 4:30 p.m.
