U.S. Beach Teams Continue to be Perfect on AVP Tour

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 19, 2010) –  The USA Volleyball beach team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, increased their 2010 AVP Nivea Tour winning streak to four out of five events on July 18 at the Hermosa Beach Open.

The pair has only failed to win one event, the Fort Lauderdale Open, where they tied for second after the championship could not be played due to harsh weather conditions.

The U.S. national beach team Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) have won their last four AVP events together. They took the Hermosa Beach $20,000 grand prize after defeating Elaine Youngs and Rachel Scott, seeded third, 21-17, 21-14 in 57 minutes.

Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) have taken the title at the Hermosa Beach Open five years in a row. They defeated 13th-seeded John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Matt Prosser (Ventura, Calif.), 21-14, 21-11 in 58 minutes. The pair took home the $20,000 prize.

The pair opened the event defeating 32nd-seeded Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Chris Icaza (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), 21-11, 21-9 in 37 minutes. They then defeated Adrian Carambula (Miami Beach, Fla.) and Russ Marchewka (Santa Ana, Calif.), seeded 16th, 21-17, 21-15 in 50 minutes.

Eighth-seeded Casey Jennings (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) defeated John Moran (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.), 21-19, 21-13 in 49 minutes in the first round. They then defeated ninth-seeded Ryan Mariano (Lake Forest, Calif.) and Ed Ratledge (Fountain Valley, Calif.), 21-19, 21-13.

 In the contender’s bracket, Jennings and Keenan  defeated 22nd-seeded Paul Baxter (Columbia Heights, Minn.) and Austin Rester (Grapevine, Texas), 21-11, 21-12 in 45 minutes. Jennings and Keenan defeated fifth-seeded Will Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Aaron Watchtfogel (Redondo Beach, Calif.), 17-21, 21-15, 21-12 in 1 hour, 15 minutes. In the quarterfinals they upset third-seeded Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 10-21, 21-18, 15-13, in 57 minutes.

The pair lost to Dalhausser/Rogers, 21-19, 91-21, 14-16, in 1:15 in the semifinal. They finished the tournament tied for third place and won $9,500.

Fuerbringer and Lucena, seeded third, defeated Reuben Danley and Jason Wight, 21-10, 21-12, in 40 minutes. They then moved on to defeat Fred Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Ty Tramblie (Newport Beach, Calif.), 21-18, 21-18 in 44 minutes. In the third round, the pair defeated Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) and Kevin Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii), the sixth-seed, 23-25, 32-21, 15-12 in 1:15. The pair finished the day with a 19-21, 21-12, 12-15 loss to Jeff Wygaard (Madison, Wis.) and Matt Olson (Cardiff, Calif.), the 10th-seed. They finished tied for fifth and total earnings of $6,000.

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also compete in the event and opened up defeating Scott Hill (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Everett Matthews (Halifax, Canada), 21-16, 21-9 in 48 minutes. They then lost to Mayer and Prosser, 30-28, 21-17, in 1 hour.

In the contenders’ bracket, they faced Jonathan Acosta (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Ty Loomis (Warner Robins, Ga.), seeded 19th, and won, 21-15, 21-19. Next they defeated Theo Brunner (Isla Vista, Calif.) and Aaron Mansfield (Goleta, Ga.), seeded 22nd, 21-19, 21-15, in 44 minutes. They were then defeated by John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) and Sean Scott (Kailua, Hawaii), 24-22, 19-21, 15-19 in 1:23. The pair finished tied for ninth and earned a total of $2,600.

Five U.S. women’s beach teams also competed in the event.

Kessy and Ross started the event off defeating Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga, Calif.) and Jaimi Gregory (Westminster, Calif.), seeded 32nd, 21-21, 21-16, 15-7, in 1:07. They then went on to defeat seventh-seeded Nancy Reynolds (Belleville, Ill.) and Kelly Wing (Murrieta, Ga.), 21-17, 21-17 in 41 minutes.

In the third round, they topped Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) and Lisa Rutledge (Vista, Calif.), seeded eighth, 21-14, 21-13 in 44 minutes. In round four, they defeated fourth-seeded Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.), 21-19, 21-17, in 50 minutes. In the semifinal, they beat fifth-seeded Annett Davis (Long Beach, Calif.) and partner Jenny Johnson Jordan (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), 21-10, 21-17 in 43 minutes.

Misty May-Treanor (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.), seeded second, first defeated Jane Croson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.), 21-17, 21-7, in 32 minutes. Next they defeated Keao Burdine (Pivo Rivera, Calif.) and Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.), seeded 18th, 21-16, 21-17, in 48 minutes. They then lost to Angela Lewis (Auburn, Calif.) and Priscilla Lima (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil), 15-21, 21-17, 17-15, in one hour and 18 minutes.

In the contenders’ bracket, they defeated 18th-seeded Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), 21-16, 21-14 in 38 minutes. They then beach Dianne Kabashima (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas), seeded 30th, 27-25, 21-14 in 54 minutes. The pair lost to Akers and Turner, 8-21, 20-22 in 43 minutes. They finished tied for fifth place and earned a total of $6,000.

Akers and Turner defeated 29th-ranked Meri-de Boyer (Poway, Calif.) and Morgan Flarity (Tampa, Fla.), 21-8, 21-11, in 30 minutes. In the second round they defeated Kropp/Pavlik, 21-16, 21-14 in 37 minutes and in the third, they defeated Davis and Johnson Jordan, 21-13, 21-17. They then lost to Kessy/Ross.

In the contenders’ bracket, they defeated May-Treanor/Branagh. They then lost to Scott/Youngs in the semifinal, 16-21, 21-13, 12-15, in 57 minutes. They finished tied for third and earned $9,500.

Eighth-seeded Ivy and Rutledge started off the first round defeating Cindie Boosin (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Stacy Loyal (Santa Monica, Calif.), seeded 25th, 21-18, 21-15 in 39 minutes. They then faced 14th-seeded Kathryn Babcock (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Erin Gray (Orland Park, Ill.) and won, 21-16, 21-19 in 39 minutes.

After they lost to Kessy/Ross, the duo faced Tara Kuk (Sarasota, Fla.) and Kim Whitney (Clearwater, Fla.), seeded 20th, in the first round of the contenders’ bracket and won, 22-20, 21-11 in 38 minutes. They then defeated Davis and Johnson Jordan, 22-20, 21-18 in 43 minutes. They finished tied for seventh and won a total of $4,600.

Along with the U.S. teams, 27 athletes from the USAV Beach High Performance program competed in the event.

Van Zwieten and Moran won three straight matches to qualify for the main draw. In their first match of the three, the beat Rob Reaugh (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Bryce Winsor (Orinda, Calif.), 21-17, 18-21, 15-5, in an hour in the second round after a first-round bye. Van Zwieten and Moran  defeated Erik Gomez (Pasadena, Texas) and Stephen Keffer (Hermosa Beach, Calif,) 21-16, 21-16, in 56 minutes. The duo then defeated Ed Lunnen (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Matt McKinney (Santa Ynez, Calif.), 21-18, 24-26, 19-17 in an hour and a half.

In the first round of the main draw, they lost to Mariano and Ratledge, seeded ninth, 21-12, 21-13 in 41 minutes.  They then lost to 25th-ranked Bundinger and Henderson, 21-23, 15-21, in 48 minutes.

Evan Barry (Del Mar, Calif.) and Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.) won their first match of the qualification bracket against Ugis Kanders (West Los Angeles, Calif.) and Louis Sandoval (Santa Monica, Calif.), 23-21, 21-15, in 55 minutes.

Jeffrey Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Antonio Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) defeated Jamie Johansen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Mike Lee (Westminster, Calif.) in the first round of qualification, 21-10, 21-13, in 36 minutes. In the second round, they defeated Tim Ryan (Suberry, Ontario) and Andrew Vazquez (Knoxville, Tenn.), 21-15, 21-15, in 43 minutes. The pair then lost to Mike Brunning (Tucson, Ariz.) and Dana Camacho (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), 21-16, 21-19, in 41 minutes.

Andrew McGuire (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) started out the qualifying round defeating Jaren Barredo (El Segundo, Calif.) and Mike Lee (Westminster, Calif.), 21-10, 21-13, in 36 minutes. In the second round of qualification defeated Ben Diggins (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Chris Littleman (Hazen, Wash.), 19-21, 21-15, 15-10, in an hour and 40 minutes. The pair then lost to Hill and Matthews, 21-16, 21-19, in 41 minutes.

Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.), and Brandon McLaughlin (Huntington Beach, Calif.) lost in the first round of qualification to Ben Brockman (Goleta, Calif.) and Dan Terry (Santa Cruz, Calif.), 21-15, 21-14, in 42 minutes.

Jace Olsen (Chandler, Ariz.) and David Vander Meer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) defeated Alan Dawber (San Diego, Calif.) and Kahl Goldfarb (San Diego, Calif.), 21-19, 21-18, in 50 minutes in the first round of the qualification bracket. They then lost to Dan Laure and Steven Vanderwerp (Grand Haven, Mich.), 12-21, 10-21, in 37 minutes. 

Vanderwerp then defeated Matt Davis (Burke, Va.) and Kevin Gregan (White Plains, Md.), 21-15, 21-15 in 40 minutes. He then lost to Duncan Budinger and Matt Henderson, 21-17, 19-21, 11-15 in 1 hour.

Brandon Fuimaono (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.) defeated Richard Krutop (San Diego, Calif.) and Kevin Kuerbis (La Mesa, Calif.), 23-21, 21-17 in 43 minutes in the first round of the qualifying bracket. They then defeated Tony Epie (Yaoundé, Calif.) and Alex Padilla (Malaga, Spain), 22-20, 21-16 in 43 minutes. The pair was then topped by Evan Engle (Cedarville, Mich.) and Jon Mesho (Traverse City, Mich.), 13-21, 21-19, 9-15 in 52 minutes.

Hudson Bates (Fairfax, N.J.) faced Alex Dale and Will Dietz in the second round of the qualifying round after a first round bye and won, 19-21, 18-21 in 46 minutes. He then defeated Paul Araizo (San Diego, Calif.) and Jarett Jensen (Encinitas, Calif.), 21-19, 21-18, in 49 minutes. Hill and Everett then topped Bates, 21-17, 17-21, 9-15 in 1:10.

Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) received an automatic bid to the main draw but lost to Strickland/Wachtfogel, 13-21, 17-21 in 46 minutes.

On the women’s side, Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) defeated Amber Martin (San Diego, Calif.) and Cassandra Sharp (Fountain Valley, Calif.), 21-14, 21-14, in 49 minutes in the first round of qualifying matches. Then she defeated Jenelle (Beason, Ill.) and Petia Yanchulova (Sofia), 20-22, 21-17, 15-9, in an hour and five minutes. Lynne Brinkmann (San Diego, Calif.) and Kelly Burning (Mesa, Ariz.) then lost to Moriarty, 19-21, 14-21, in 47 minutes. Moriarty then lost to Youngs and Scott, 11-21, 15-21 in 50 minutes.

Kiley Hall (Austin, Texas) defeated Sarah Maknija (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Tamoa Nakayama (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the first round of the qualifying round, 21-10, 21-13, in 38 minutes. She then lost to Kim DiCello (San Diego, Calif.) and Iwona Lodzik (Prospect Heights, Ill.), 15-21, 9-21 in 33 minutes.

Jane Croson (Long Beach, Calif.) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) began their run to the main draw after first defeating Shelly Malone (Ventura, Calif.) and Renee Smith (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), 21-10, 21-11 in 37 minutes. They then defeated Sarah Day (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Kristin Ursillo (San Diego, Calif.), 21-16, 22-24, 15-11 in 1:09. In the last round of qualifying, they defeated Gretchen Duffner (St. Louis, Mo.) and Carol Hamilton (San Diego, Calif.), 21-16, 22-20 in 50 minutes.  

Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.) and Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.) lost their opening match to Angie Hall (San Diego, Calif.) and Suzana Manole (Buchonest, Romania), 21-19, 17-21, 13-15 in 50 minutes.

Chelsea Rashoff (Danville, Calif.) and Tara Roenicke (Alta Loma, Calif.) lost their first qualifying match to Sara Dukes (Danville, Calif.) and Chrissie Zartman (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), 15-21, 8-21 in 35 minutes.

Laray Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Rebecca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif.) lost to Boyer/Flarity, 19-21, 8-21 in 45 minutes.

Courtney Trevino (Austin, Texas) and Mary Vaccaro (Orinda, Calif.) defeated Meghan Barkman (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Jenee Gilliam (Englewood, Colo.), 21-17, 21-17 in 45 minutes in the first round of qualification. They then lost to Dana Fiume (Island Park, N.Y.) and Shayna Munson (Temperance, Mich.), 17-21, 17-21 in 42 minutes.

Brooke Sweat (Estero, Fla.) received an automatic bid to the main draw but lost her opening match to Claire d’Amore (Torrance, Calif.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.), 19-21, 17-21 in 42 minutes.
