COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 22, 2010) – The USAV Beach High Performance A2 program began its camp on Monday (July 19) at the new Olympic Training Center beach volleyball courts in Chula Vista, Calif. The camp included 13 boys and 16 girls between the ages of 14-18 and from 11 different regions.

Along with the HP camp, the USA Beach Youth National Team will train at the new beach courts as it prepares for its participation in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Youth (U-19) World Championships on July 28-Aug. 1 in Porto, Portugal.

At the end of the camp, the teams will all compete at the High Performance Beach Championships, on July 22-25 in conjunction with the AVP Nivea Tour Long Beach Open being held, July 24-25.

The new Chula Vista Olympic Training Center has opened its six, newly built courts as a joint project between the USOC and USA Volleyball. The development for the venue began May 10th and was finalized Tuesday, July 21.

“Literally, the nets were being cranked up as [the players] were stepping out on the courts,” USOC Associate Director of the Chula Vista Training Center Dave Stow said. “That’s how close things were being put together.”

The courts were specifically developed for USA Volleyball Beach training purposes and will be the new home of the USAV Beach High Performance program.

“I am very enthused that we were able to take advantage of the facility at Chula Vista so quickly,” USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal said. “It shows how valuable this will be in supporting growth in beach activities and programs of USAV and uses we will get from this venue.”

“It was truly a great partnership between USOC and USAV,” Stow said. “It wouldn’t have happened without the cooperation from both sides…We are excited to have a nice, beautiful new venue with a sport with a great plan.”

The venue has completed its first phase of development, the courts, and will move onto developing the projected second phase of concession stands and food courts.

The next event that will be held at the new courts is the NORCECA Beach Circuit event on Aug. 27-29, followed by the USAV Junior Beach National Team pre-competition camp in September.
