Day Three Results at USAV HP Championships

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (July 28, 2010) – The USA Volleyball High Performance Championships (HPC) has past the midway point of the five-day event on Wednesday evening at Wisconsin Dells, Wis. In some cases for the six-division international tournament comprising of 87 squads, teams have already earned spots into the gold-medal matches or the semifinals to be played on Thursday and Friday.

In the Girls’ International Youth Division, Team Florida GYNT is 3-0 in the Second Round Pool A ahead of both Southern California Red and USA Girls’ Youth Continental White Team with 2-1 records. Team Florida and Southern California face each other to conclude the second round Thursday morning. In Pool B of the second round, Badger Girls’ International Youth is 3-0 heading into its final pool match on Thursday morning. The two pool winners will play in the division’s gold-medal match on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

The 2010 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team leads the Women’s International Junior Division Second Round Pool A with a 3-0 record. The squad is primarily the same roster that captured the 2010 NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship earlier this year. USA Women’s Junior A2 Blue and USA Girls’ Youth A2 Red are both 2-1 in the pool. The USA Women’s Junior A2 Blue Team faces the 2010 U.S. Girls’ Youth National Team in a key battle to settle the pool winner and gold-medal match entry. In the division’s second round pool B, USA Women’s Junior A2 Red and USA Women’s Junior A2 White are both 3-0 and will face each other Thursday morning to see who gains the top spot out of the pool and spot into the gold-medal match.

In the second round of the Boys’ International Youth Division, USA Boys’ Youth A2 Red won Pool 1 with a 2-0 record to gain the top spot. In Pool 2, USA Boys’ Youth A2 White won both its matches to win the pool. The semifinals of the gold-medal flight has USA Boys’ Youth A2 Red meeting USA Boys’ Youth A2 Gold and USA Boys’ Youth A2 White facing Chile Boys’ Youth at 1:30 p.m.

In the Girls’ National Select Division, Puerto Rico Girls leads the Second Round Pool A with a 3-0 record, but defeat Ohio Valley Girls’ National Select (2-1) Thursday morning to win the pool outright and assure a spot into the final gold-medal flight. Southern California Region Red is also 2-1 in the pool. In the division’s Pool B of the second round, Badger Girls’ National Select and Iowa Girls’ Select are 3-0 and will meet Thursday morning to decide the top seed out of the pool and a chance at the gold medal.

Badger Boys’ National Youth has clinched the top spot in the Boys’ National Youth Division with a 7-0 record and one match to play Thursday morning against USA Boys’ Select Continental White (3-4). Ohio Valley Boys’ National Youth, Puerto Rico Boys and Team Florida Boys’ Youth National, all 5-2 with one match left in pool play, are in the hunt for the second seed out of pool play and spot in the gold-medal match.

After the third day of competition, Lone Star High Performance Youth Blue captured the top seed out of the Girls’ National Youth Division with a 7-1 record and is done in pool play. It won its last seven matches of pool play after suffering a five-set loss to Carolina Youth (1-6) to start the tournament. Keystone High Performance Girls’ and Chesapeake Youth are both 5-2 in pool play with one match remaining in pool play. Iowa Girls’ Youth National Team N and Oklahoma Youth are both 4-3. With only the top two teams from pool play advancing to the gold-medal flight, Keystone, Chesapeake, Iowa and Oklahoma are all fighting for the second spot. Keystone and Iowa are the only teams in contention facing each other in the final pool match.

Gold-medal matches will be played in five of the six divisions on Thursday. The Girls’ National Select Division starts the procession of gold-medal matches at 1:30 p.m. Both the Girls’ International Youth Division and the Boys’ National Youth Division title matches will be played at 3:30 p.m. The Women’s International Junior Division championship will be decided at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Boys’ International Youth Division gold-medal match at 7 p.m.

Girls’ National Youth Division wraps up the tournament on Friday with its gold-medal match at 8 a.m., along with final classification matches in Girls’ National Select Division.

The HPC features an international theme with some variations of FIVB rules. Matches are best-of-five sets format with most teams playing eight matches during the event. The tournament will utilize some new FIVB rules such as the primary and secondary libero.

A total of 87 teams are competing in the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships’ six different age and gender championship brackets taking place on 14 courts at the Chula Vista Resort. The USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, which featured a tournament-record 92 teams in 2009, combines the best teams from USAV High Performance Pipeline teams, USAV Region High Performance Teams and international squads in the marquee event.
