Pacific Open Draws 140 Junior Beach Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 16, 2010) – The Pacific Open, second-to-last event on the USA Volleyball Beach Junior Tour, was part of the 29th Annual Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament in Seaside, Ore.

The tournament hosted some 800 total teams (across all divisions) with 140 teams (up from 97 teams in 2009) competing in the Pacific Open junior event. Age divisions were limited to under-14, U16 and U18 for both boys and girls.

Tia Withers (Beaverton, Ore.) and Sam Moore (Newport, Ore.) won the girls’ U18 division with a 25-18 final-match score over Keirsten Mend (Penticton, B.C.) and Brianna Beamish (Surrey, B.C.). Amber and Chelsea Moser (Willamina, Ore.) placed third.

In the U18 boys’ division, David Smallwood (Seattle, Wash.) and Max Elkin (Seattle, Wash.) defeated David Mokan (Portland, Ore.) and Mike Snicker (Portland, Ore.) in the final, 25-23. Jack Papin (Seattle, Wash.) and Tom Logan (Kenmore, Wash.) placed third.

In the U16 girls’ division, Tani Stephens (Albany, Ore.) and Haley Nice (Seaside, Ore.) beat Sarah Hauah (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Bryce Larson (Mukilteo, Wash.), 25-15 in the final. Valerie Hughes (Tigard, Ore.) and Emily Pena (Salem, Ore.) took third with a 25-23 victory over Megan McNamara (Vancouver, B.C.) and Nicole McNamara (Vancouver, B.C.).

The boys’ U16 division was won by Ethan McCluskey (Penticton, B.C.) and Tyler Berthelsen (Penticton, B.C.) with a 15-11 victory.

Halie Hansel (Camas, Wash.) and Sophie Peel (Washougal, Wash.) won the girls’ U14 division with a 15-11 win over Eastyn Baleto (Seattle, Wash.) and Shayne McPherson (Seattle, Wash.). Blake Nelson (Eugene, Ore.) and Alicia Wodke (Eugene, Ore.) took third with a 16-14 victory over Payton Rund (Albany, Ore.) and Libbie Hoene (Lebanon, Ore.).

Patrick Donaldson (Seattle, Wash.) and Kevin Moneda (Seattle, Wash.) won the boys’ U14 division with a 15-7 victory over Andrey Yuzko (Gresham, Ore.) and David Zakharyuk (Vancouver, Wash.).

The 2010 USAV Beach Junior Tour will conclude Aug. 22 with the Tour Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
