"We didn’t start out each set very well," U.S. Men's Junior Head Coach John Hawks (Huntington Beach, Calif.) said. "But I’ve got to give our guys a lot of credit. We made the necessary plays to get us going. Still, we knew we were going to play a very strong opponent in Mexico. It was a big test for us."
Outside hitter Taylor Crabb (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the United States with 13 points on 12 kills (0.65 hitting percentage) and one block. Opposite Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif.) added 12 points on 12 kills (0.17 hitting percentage). "We were really surprised with how much fire they came out with," said U.S. team captain and middle blocker Dylan Davis (Newport Beach, Calif.), who scored six points on two kills and four blocks.. "We were not expecting that and it caught off us guard. But we came back and fought through it."
Setter Micah Christenson (Honolulu, Hawaii) contributed six points on four blocks and two aces. Opposite Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scored one point on a kill.
Christenson was credited with 26 running sets and no faults on 67 attempts. Libero Evan Mottram (Leona Valley, Calif.) led the team in digs with five and three faults. Juan Revualta was Mexico's top scorer with a match-high 14 points.
"The team did their best and they were really trying," said Mexico’s Head Coach Francisco Javier Jimenez Espitia. "But things didn’t work out. The U.S. were very well prepared and they are a very strong team."
Hawks started Sander and Crabb at outside hitter, Davis and Mochalski at middle blocker, Torres at opposite, Christenson at setter and Mottram at libero. Scott Kevorken (Westlake Village, Calif.) entered the match as a substitute middle blocker in the second set and started the third.
