U.S. Women Move Up Two Spots in World Ranking

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 30, 2010) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team has moved up two spots to second place in the FIVB World Ranking released on Aug. 30.
The announcement comes one day after the Americans won their third FIVB World Grand Prix, the premier annual international volleyball tournament.
The U.S. Women’s National Team captured the 18th FIVB World Grand Prix title with a 5-0 record in the Final Round. The U.S. defeated No. 1 Brazil, No. 3 China, No. 4 Italy, No. 5 Japan and No. 8 Poland in the Final Round.
The Americans, who have won 11 matches in a row, also won the World Grand Prix in 1995 and 2001. The U.S. has now medaled in all three of its 2010 tournaments including a silver medal at the 26th Montreux Volley Masters and bronze at the Pan American Cup, both played in June.
Brazil remains as the top team in the world according to the FIVB rankings. China dropped one spot to third place in the latest ranking, while Italy leaped three spots to fourth place after its bronze finish at the World Grand Prix. Japan and Cuba remained fifth and sixth in the world ranking. Russia, which did not qualify for the World Grand Prix, dropped four positions to seventh. Poland advanced three spots to eighth. Rounding out the top 10 are Serbia at No. 9 and Netherlands at No. 10.
