COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 13, 2010) – The 2011 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships (HPC) will be hosted in Tucson, Ariz., according to USAV Managing Director of Indoor High Performance Tom Pingel.
The 13th annual event, which typically draws approximately 1,600 participants, will be held July 26-30, 2011, on 15 courts at the Tucson Convention Center. Tucson also hosted the 2008 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships.
“We are very excited to return to Tucson for the 2011 USA HP Championships,” Pingel said. “The 2008 event was our first time to Tucson and things went very well. We are confident that the 2011 event will be even better.”
USA Volleyball aims to have nearly 100 teams compete in six different age and gender championship brackets. The USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, which featured a tournament-record 92 teams in 2009, combines the best teams from USAV High Performance Pipeline teams, USAV Region High Performance Teams and international squads in the marquee event.
The HPC has divisions for Girls’ International Junior teams (born in 1991 and after), Boys’ International Youth teams (born in 1992 and after), Girls’ International Youth teams (born in 1994 and after), Girls’ National Youth team (born in 1994 and after), Girls’ National Select teams (born in 1996 and after) and Boys’ National Youth teams (born in 1993 and after). Both the girls’ and boys’ events have been contested simultaneously in the same venue since 2007.
The HPC features an international theme with some variations of FIVB rules. Matches are best-of-five sets format with most teams playing eight matches during the event. The tournament will utilize some new FIVB rules such as the primary and secondary libero. In addition, the FIVB experimental rule of six total subs per set but not limiting a player to one entry will again be used.
USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline teams competing at the HPC will comprise of athletes’ tryout results held February to April 2011. Tryout locations and dates will be announced by January 2011.
Joseph Volleyball Camps will serve as the host committee for the 2011 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships. The Tucson Convention and Visitor’s Bureau in cooperation with the Arizona Region, one of 40 USA Volleyball Regional Volleyball Associations, will serve as the local hosts to all the teams.
