LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Sept. 20, 2010) – U.S. beach volleyball player Phil Dalhausser has been named the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour’s most outstanding international performer.
Dalhausser (Ormond, Fla.) teamed with Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) to capture nine SWATCH FIVB World Tour titles in 2010, including Grand Slam gold medals in Italy (Rome), Switzerland (Gstaad), Austria (Klagenfurt) and Poland (Stare Jablonki). The team finished second and third in major events in Russia (Moscow) and Norway (Stavanger), respectively.
Dalhausser, 30, is no stranger to post season awards on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, but 2010 marked the first time he was named the circuit most outstanding player along with being voted as the top offensive player, and best hitter, setter and blocker. Dalhausser also received votes as the sportsman of the year, top defender and the most inspirational player.
A full-time player on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since 2006 when Rogers became his regular partner, Dalhausser was named the circuit’s best blocker (2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010) and hitter (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) for the fourth-time, the top offensive player (2008, 2009 and 2010) for the third-time and the best setter (2009 and 2010) for the second-time.
With “final four” finishes in each of their 12 FIVB appearances in 2010, Dalhausser and Rogers, the 2008 Olympic gold medalists, became the first American men’s team to win the SWATCH FIVB World Tour championship since the early 1990s when Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos were the top international team when the season overlapped two years (1992-1993). Dalhausser and Rogers also established a record for winnings by a men’s team in a single-season with US$387,700 in earnings.
Rogers, who saw his team end the season with a 23-match winning streak as the pair won 75 of 86 matches in 2010, was named the SWATCH FIVB World Tour’s top defender for the fourth-time. After tying Argentina’s Martin Conde as the best international defender player in 2006, Rogers topped the defensive voting in 2007 and 2008.
The FIVB’s top setter in 2005, Rogers finished second to Dalhausser in this year’s most outstanding player voting. Dalhausser and Rogers’ five-season partnership has also netted gold medals at the 2007 FIVB world championships and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Combined with this year’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour championship, Dalhausser and Rogers join Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos as the only men’s teams to capture Olympic, world and tour championships.
Other award winners on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour were Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Bruno Oscar Schmidt, China’s Linyin Xu, Karl Jaani of Estonia and Igor Kolodinsky of Russia, who was named the international circuit’s top server for the fourth-straight season. Nicknamed the “Bazooka”, Kolodinsky’s top serve in 2010 was clocked at 108.7 km at June’s stop in Moscow.
The 37-year old Emanuel, who played in his 200th FIVB event earlier this season and posted his 1,000th match win in winning a bronze medal with Alison Cerutti last month in Kristiansand, Norway, was named the SWATCH sportsman of the year for the second-time. A regular on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour since 1994 with 70 international gold medals in 204 events, Emanuel was the circuit’s most outstanding player and best hitter in 2006.
Bruno was named the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour most improved as the 23-year old Brazilian also finished third in the top defensive player voting. Xu, who teamed with Penggen Wu to become the first Chinese men’s team to win FIVB gold medals by topping the podium in Russia and France, was honored as the most inspirational player with Jaani being named the rookie-of-the-year after playing his first full-season on the SWATCH circuit with Rivo Vesik.
Highlighted by six Grand Slam events, the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar began in April and will conclude in November with the final women’s event in Phuket, Thailand. With $6.83-million in prize money, the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar featured 17 sites in 14 countries. The women’s award winners will be announced in mid-November as two events remain on the schedule starting with a stop at the end of October in Sanya, China.
