COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 16, 2010) – The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team remains in second place behind top-ranked Brazil in the official FIVB world rankings published on Nov. 16.
The U.S. recently finished the FIVB World Championship in fourth place. Team USA finished the 2010 season with a 28-13 record – a 10-match improvement in the victory column from last season. The U.S. claimed the silver medal at the Montreux Volley Masters and the bronze at the Pan American Cup in June 2010. Using a starting lineup of two rookies and four players with less than two years experience, the Americans earned the 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix gold medal.
Italy climbed two places to third in the world ranking after a fifth-place finish at the World Championship. Japan gained two spots into a tie for third with Italy after earning the bronze medal at the World Championship. China dropped two places to sixth with a disappointing 10th-place finish at the World Championship. Russia, which won the FIVB World Championship, moved up a spot to sixth place. Cuba fell one position to seventh with a 12th-place finish at the World Championship. Rounding out the top 10 in the new world ranking are Poland, Serbia and Germany in positions eight through 10. Germany moved up five places.
Turkey made a huge gain in the world ranking, moving up 10 places to No. 12. Other big shifts included Croatia climbing 16 spots to No. 29 and Czech Republic moving up 14 spots to No. 24.
