COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 9, 2010) – USA Volleyball will be heavily involved in education sessions being held at the 2010 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Annual Convention, which is scheduled for Dec. 15-18 in Kansas City, Mo.
USA Volleyball will have 23 staff members, players or key individuals within the organization attending the AVCA Convention including CEO Doug Beal, U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Hugh McCutcheon, U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Alan Knipe and U.S. Sitting Team Program Director/Women’s Head Coach Bill Hamiter. USA Volleyball will be presenting several sessions during the AVCA Convention, along with specific sessions for the Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) and Beach Coaching Accreditation Program (BCAP) certification. Other USA Volleyball staff members will be meeting with the AVCA Convention attendees and leaders of the sport.
“I believe it is very important for our staff members from so many of our departments to attend the AVCA Annual Convention as it is the single-most significant gathering of volleyball leaders in our country,” Beal said. “We have been steadily ramping up our presence and support of the AVCA Convention as Kathy DeBoer (AVCA executive director) and her staff have done a great job of adding features and unique programs that appeal to constituents far beyond the coaching field that make this convention a must-attend event for the volleyball community. Our relationship to the AVCA is one of our most important strategic alliances. USA Volleyball is committed to working with the AVCA staff to enhance this event.”
U.S. Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Gabe Gardner will sign autographs at the Sprint Center from 4:45-5:45 p.m. prior to the start of the first NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship semifinal match.
Gardner, a 2008 Olympic Games gold medalist with the U.S. Olympic Volleyball Team, will also sign autographs, including on a limited number of Molten mini volleyballs, and talk with the coaches in the USA Volleyball exhibition booth on Dec. 16 from 2:30-4 p.m., on Dec. 17 from noon to 3 p.m. and on Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. until noon. He will also be on hand for the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Dec. 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
May-Treanor, a three-time Olympian and two-time Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist (2004, 2008) with playing partner Kerri Walsh, will also be attending the AVCA Annual Convention for another reason. She will be taking the USA Volleyball Beach CAP Level I course as part of the certification process with the intent of achieving Beach Cadre status to teach future USAV Coaching Education courses. Approximately 12 coaches will attend sessions from Dec. 15 through Dec. 18 to receive their Beach CAP certification.
The USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) begins on Dec. 14 at the Kansas City Convention Center, a day prior to the official start of the AVCA Annual Convention. Approximately 30 individuals are taking part in the CAP Level II program, and another 25 individual taking CAP Level I courses. CAP sessions on Dec. 15 include Kyle Mashima presenting Rotate 123, along with topics on coaching philosophy and guiding principles throughout the AVCA Convention held through Dec. 18 and a wrap-up day on Dec. 19 at the Heart of American Region Facility.
Along with CAP, the Beach Coaching Accreditation Program (BCAP) will have several topics open for discussion at the AVCA Convention with USAV Managing Director of Beach Programs, USAV Director of Beach Programs Ali Wood-Lamberson, USAV Beach Programs Administrative Assistant Jon Aharoni and Tyra Turner all leading sessions.
