COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 7, 2011) – USA Volleyball has selected Des Moines, Iowa, and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as hosts for future USA Volleyball High Performance Championships (HPC).
Des Moines will host the 2012 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships July 25-29 at the Iowa Events Center, while the marquee event returns to Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center in 2013 with competitions dates of July 24-28. Fort Lauderdale previously hosted the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in 2006 (girls’ only) and 2007 (boys’ and girls’).
“We are excited at the opportunity to take the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships to Des Moines,” USA Volleyball Managing Director of Indoor High Performance Tom Pingel said. “I know that Des Moines and the Iowa Region will be fabulous hosts in 2012. Returning to Ft. Lauderdale is an easy decision as they have been the host of some of our most successful HP Championships and I’m sure the same will be true in 2013.”
Tucson was announced earlier this fall as the host for the upcoming 13th Annual USA Volleyball High Performance Championships, which will be held July 26-30, 2011, at the Tucson Convention Center. Tucson also hosted the 2008 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships.
The HPC typically draws 90-plus teams filling six different age and gender championship brackets. The event features the best teams from USA Volleyball High Performance pipeline teams, USA Volleyball Region High Performance teams and international squads. Both the girls’ and boys’ events have been contested simultaneously in the same venue since 2007.
The HPC features an international theme with some variations of FIVB rules. Matches are best-of-five sets format with most teams playing eight matches during the event. The tournament has utilized some new FIVB rules such as the primary and secondary libero. In addition, the FIVB experimental rule of six total subs per set but not limiting a player to one entry could be used again.
In the past, USA Volleyball had announced its High Performance Championships host cities less than a year out. However, by giving three cities advance notice of hosting the event provides better planning or all involved.
“Announcing the dates and sites of the event this far in advance is simply to confirm our intentions with the host cities, as well as let the Regions conducting HP Region programs to be able to better prepare for the future,” Pingel said.
Joseph Volleyball Camps will serve as the host committee for all three USA Volleyball High Performance Championships held through 2013.
