Fendrick, Hanson Undefeated after First Day of Play

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 26, 2011) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) were undefeated Friday after the first day of pool play at the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of 2011 NORCECA Circuit.
Fendrick and Hanson won against Kacie MacTavish and Julie Rodrigue of Canada-2 (21-15, 21-15) and over Lolette Rodriguez and Valeska Hernández of Nicaragua (21-4, 21-8).
Other women’s teams who were undefeated after the first day were the defending champions, Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo (Puerto Rico-1), Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney (Canada-1), Gina and Ginette Del Rosario (Dominican Republic) and Martha Revuelta and Xitlali Herrera (Mexico-1).
The USA-2 women’s team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Jen Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) was 1-1 after Friday’s matches. The pair fell to Bansley and Maloney (21-19, 20-22, 15-13) to open the day on Friday, then came back to defeat Trinidad and Tobago’s Ayana Dyette and Elki Phillip (21-12, 21-10).
Both U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams competing in Cayman Islands are 1-1 after the first day of pool play.
The USA-1 team of Will Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Lucas Wisniakowski (Houston, Texas) fell to the Canada-2 team of Martin Reader and Chaim Schalk (21-15, 22-20) and then defeated Nicaragua’s Dany López and Gerald Umaña (21-18, 17-21, 15-7).
The USA-2 team of Jon Mesko (Traverse City, Mich.) and Paul Baxter (Columbia Heights, Minn.) fell to Costa Rica’s Esteban Escobar and Alexander Villegas (16-21, 21-19, 15-13) then defeated Guatemala’s Julio Recino and Erick Garrido (21-7, 21-15).
Reader and Schalk were undefeated after the first day along with Orlando Irizarry and Amaury Velasco (Puerto Rico-1), Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen (Canada-1), Yewddy Perez and German Recio (Dominican Republic), and Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwood (Puerto Rico-2).
