Fendrick, Hanson Win NORCECA Beach Gold

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 27, 2011) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) won the gold medal at the Cayman Islands Beach Volleyball Tournament, the first leg of 2011 NORCECA Circuit, on Seven Miles Beach in Grand Cayman.
In Sunday’s gold medal match, Fendrick and Hanson took a straight-set victory (21-13, 21-14) over Martha Revuelta and Xitlali Herrera of Mexico-1 on Sunday.
It was the third win of the day for Hanson and Fendrick, who earlier defeated Vanessa Virgen and Cinthia Cruz of Mexico-2 (21-10, 21-14) and downed Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Canada-1 (21-17, 21-17). The USA-1 team did not lose a set in the tournament.
The USA-2 women’s team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Jen Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) fell in the quarterfinals to defending champions Yarleen Santiago and Dariam Acevedo of Puerto Rico-1.
Both U.S. men’s teams lost in the quarterfinals. The USA-1 team of Will Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Lucas Wisniakowski (Houston, Texas) fell to Mexico’s Ulises and Lombardo Ontiveros, 21-17, 21-13.
The USA-2 team of Jon Mesko (Traverse City, Mich.) and Paul Baxter (Columbia Heights, Minn.) lost to Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Canada-1, 19-21, 21-16, 16-14. Binstock and Van Huizen went on to win the tournament, beating Puerto Ricans Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwood in the final, 21-19, 21-14
The next NORCECA Beach Circuit tournament will be April 8-10 in Guatemala. Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) will be the women’s USA-1 and Jennifer Snyder (Glendale, Ariz.) and Erin Gray (Orland Park, Ill.) will be USA-2.
Among the men, Mike Bruning (Tucson, Ariz.) and Jason Wight (West Springfield, Va.) will be USA-1 and Stevo VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Matt McKinney (Santa Ynez, Calif.) will be USA-2.
