U.S. Beach Teams Set to Compete in Dominican

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 17, 2011) – Four U.S. volleyball teams are in Dominican Republic to play in the Central Zone Tournament of the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup on April 18-20 in Boca Chica.

Playing in the women’s bracket will be the U.S. teams of Ashley Ivy (Arlington, Texas) and Lisa Rutledge (Vista, Calif.) along with Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.). Playing for the men will be the U.S. teams of Bill Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Aaron Wachtfogel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) along with Stevo VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Matt McKinney (Santa Ynez, Calif.).

The six-country competition is part of the qualifying process toward the 2012 London Olympic Games. It includes two teams each from Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and United States.

The competition will be played under a best-of-five, country-versus-country format with a 15-point “golden set” in case of a tie.

Dominican Republic: Gina Del Rosario/Ginette Del Rosário and Yudelka Bonilla/Isis Silverio. México: Bibiana Candelas/Mayra Garcia and Martha Revuelta/Diana Estrada. Puerto Rico: Yarleen Santiago/Dariam Acevedo and Beatriz Rivera/Tatiana Encarnación.

Other men’s teams participating: Canada: Christian Redmann/Ben Saxton and Martin Reader/Chaim Schalk. Cuba: Karel Peña/Javier Jimenez and Yadrian Escobar/Yaimel Borrell. Dominican Republic: Yewddy Perez/German Recio and Francisco Abreu/Eduardo Concepción. Mexico: Juan Virgen/Aldo Miramontes and Ulises Ontiveros/Lombardo Ontiveros. Puerto Rico: Roberto Rodríguez/Christopher Underwood and Pablo Guzmán/Fernando Morales.
