COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 19, 2011) – Two U.S. men’s teams remain alive in the Prague Open main draw in the Czech Republic, the first men’s single gender tournament on the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour.
Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), the reigning Olympic gold medalists and top-seeded team in the Prague Open, continued their win streak Thursday defeating two teams to advance to the third round. The duo outplayed Canada’s 32nd-seeded team of Maverick Hatch and Sam Scharachter 21-19, 21-11. The pair then defeated France’s 17th-seeded team of Andy Ces and Kevin Ces, 21-18, 14-21, 15-10.
Dalhausser and Rogers, the defending 2010 Prague Open champions, will take on the Czech Republic’s ninth-seeded team of Petre Benes and Premysl Kubala on Friday in the third round of the main draw.
Fifth-seeded Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) were victorious in the first-round, defeating Germany’s 28th-seeded team of Markus Böckermann and Mischa Urbatzka, 21-16, 26-24. Gibb and Rosenthal fell into Friday’s consolation round after losing to Brazil’s 12th-seeded team of Pedro Henrique Cunha and Pedro Solberg Salgado. The U.S. pair will play China’s sixth-seeded Linyin Xu and Penggen Wu in hopes of advancing into Saturday’s semifinals.
Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) struggled in the fourth round, taking a 21-18, 21-12 loss to 29th-seeded Sascha Heyer and Sebastian Chevallier of Switzerland. Falling into the consolation match, Fuerbringer and Lucena fought for three sets against 20th-seeded Aleksandr Samoilovs and Ruslans Sorokins of Latvia, but eventually lost 13-21, 21-14, 15-11. The loss eliminated the duo from the tournament.
