Borinquen Coqui 13-1F, Club West 13-National Win GJNC 13s Titles

ATLANTA (June 28, 2011) – The 13 National and American Divisions at the 2011 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships concluded play with medal matches in the respective gold-medal divisions on Wednesday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Earning titles on the second day of gold-medal play were Borinquen Coqui 13-1F (Puerto Rico) in the 13 National Division and Club West 13-National (Southern California) in the 13 American Division.

The USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships continues through July 4. Championships will be conducted for 15 Open, National and American Divisions on June 30, 12 National and American Divisions on July 1, 17 Open, National and American Divisions on July 2, 18 Open, National and American Divisions on July 3 and 16 Open, National and American Divisions on July 4.

The 13 American Division battle for the gold-medal was between fifth-seeded Club West 13 - National team and No. 2 seed Xtreme 13 Black (Lone Star). The two squads kept the match close in the beginning of the first set. Club West finally gained a 15-11 advantage and outscored Xtreme 10-2 the rest of the set.

The second set started out much like the first with both teams battling back and forth with no more than a two-point advantage over the other team. Xtreme finally broke away and took a 14-11 advantage, but Club West fought hard to close the gap. Xtreme kept their point spread and won the second set 25-20.

The third set was a fight between both teams until Club West took a 12-6 lead. Xtreme took a timeout and came back to win the next two points. However, those were the last two points the team earned and Club West won 15-8.

Club West 13-National, which lost its opening match of the tournament in pool play, bounced back and reached the gold-medal match after defeating No. 7 seed Premier 13 Gold (Great Plains) 19-25, 25-17, 15-12 in the semifinal.

Xtreme 13 Black defeated No. 28 seed Seal Beach 13-Tony (Southern California) 25-17, 25-23 in the semifinal to reach the gold-medal match. Seal Beach 13-Tony was the only team to knock off Club West 13-National.

No. 8 Borinquen Coqui 13-1F and second-seeded ASICS MAVS 13 Blue (Heart of America) competed for the title in the 13 National Division in a battle of undefeated teams.

ASICS MAVS 13 Blue and Borinquen Coqui battled back and forth in the first set. ASICS MAVS pulled out a 25-21 victory in the first set. The second set would end with the same 25-21 finish, but this time in the Borinquen Coqui team’s favor.

In the third set, both teams came out ready to play and with the mindset of winning. Even though ASICS MAVS put up a tough fight, they could not deny the Borinquen Coqui’s aggressive play which resulted in a 15-5 victory.

Borinquen Coqui reached the gold-medal match after defeating No. 5 seed Madfrog 13’s NAT STEF (North Texas) 25-18, 25-21 in the semifinal. ASICS MAVS 13 Blue defeated the ninth-seed Nebraska Elite 13 Thunder 25-20, 22-25, 15-5 in the semifinal.
