The 12 National and American Divisions crowned their champions in Atlanta on Friday at the 2011 USAV GJNC.

ATLANTA (July 1, 2011) – The 12 National and American Divisions at the 2011 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships wrapped-up play with medal matches in their respective gold-medal divisions on Friday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.

Earning titles on the fourth day of gold-medal play were Borinquen Coqui 12-1F (Puerto Rico) in the 12 National Division and Starlings-Monrovia (Southern California) in the 12 American Division.

The USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships continues through July 4. Championships will be conducted for 17 Open, National and American Divisions on July 2, 18 Open, National and American Divisions on July 3 and 16 Open, National and American Divisions on July 4.

The 12 American Division battle for the gold-medal was between No. 3 seed Starlings- Monrovia 12 and No. 6 seed Victory 12 Elite (North Texas). Starlings had a seven-point run to gain early control midway through the first set at a 16-7 score. After striking back and minimizing the point gap, Victory Elite took a seven-point run of its own, shrinking its deficit to 19-16. From that point, Starlings wouldn’t let Victory score again and it responded with a six-point spurt to finish out the set with a 25-16 score.

In the second set, Victory came out ready to play and earned a five-point lead over the Starlings at 15-10. At this point, Starlings stepped up its game and tied the set at 20-20. The two teams battled it to the finish, producing tied scores 21-21 through 27-27. Finally, Starlings came out on top earning its gold medal with a 29-27 score.

Starlings-Monrovia 12 reached the gold-medal match after defeating No. 9 seed Alamo 12 Kaepa (Lonestar) 25-20, 26-24 in the semifinal. Starlings-Monrovia went undefeated in the tournament, while Victory bounced back from three consecutive losses to reach the gold-medal match. Starlings had defeated Victory in three sets during the first round. Victory 12 Elite reached the gold-medal match after defeating No. 7 seed Laguna Beach 12 Gaido (Southern California) 25-14, 25-12.

No. 13 seed Borinquen Coqui 12-1F (Puerto Rico) and No. 35 seed ASICS MAVS 12 Blue (Heart of America) competed for the title in the 12 National Division. MAVS started off the first set with a steady climb to a steep 14-5 advantage. At that point, Borinquen turned up the heat and made a 16-point run to reverse the lead into its favor, making it a 21-14 lead. MAVS fought hard, but couldn’t take control back as Borinquen won the set 25-20.

The second set was a more competitive set throughout. At 17-13, MAVS sailed out their lead to a 25-16 victory.

In the third set, the two teams fought neck-in-neck until the end. The match was tied 14-all, 15-all, 16-all, 17-all and 18-all before Borinquen finally got the upper hand and pulled out a 20-18 victory.

Borinquen Coqui, avenged its first-round pool loss to ASICS MAVS 12 Blue, defeated Madfrog 12’s Lewellen (North Texas) 25-12, 25-17 in the semifinal. ASICS MAVS 12 Blue, which was undefeated heading into the gold-medal match, defeated No. 18 seed Wave 12Casey (Southern California) 25-17, 25-23 in the semifinal.
